Honestly, Antibes is the best town on the whole French Riviera.

There's a sandy beach right in the town at Plage de la Gravette, below the old walls. There's the Marché Provençal, the Jardin des Poètes when you want somewhere quiet, and old streets made for getting lost in.

Is Menton worth a day trip? Absolutely, but I'd stay the night.

By late morning the old town fills with day-trippers. Stay over and you're up before them: the Rampes Saint-Michel empty, the streets quiet, the morning yours.

Menton's best view isn't from the seafront. It's from the cemetery at the very top of the old town, about fifteen minutes' walk up from the harbour, and it's free.

The Cimetière du Vieux-Château is built on terraces where the castle once stood, and from the top you can see from Cap Martin all the way to Italy.

The grave to find is Janina Lewandowska's. She came to Menton for the cure and died here in 1912, aged 27. Above her tomb a marble woman rises from an open sarcophagus, and it's magnificent. The same Milanese sculptor made a near-twin for a young woman buried in Warsaw. A few terraces away are Russian princes and William Webb Ellis, the man said to have invented rugby.

Don't climb Menton's Rampes Saint-Michel after midday.

They're the steps that take you up from the seafront into the old town. On my visit in September I was there around 9 and again around 11, and both times there was room to stop for a photo. By the afternoon they were packed, ten other people in every shot, and it's been the same on plenty of other afternoons I've been.

At the top, enjoy dramatic views of the Basilica.

Don't waste your morning hunting for parking in Menton.

I park at Parking Vieille Ville – Sablettes, on the seafront just below the old town. It's €16.20 for the whole day or €4.70 for two hours (standard rate, checked 5 October 2026). There's a 2 m height limit, so leave the camper van elsewhere.

When I went in September it was surprisingly easy to find, and so was a space. From the exit it's two minutes on foot to the Rampes Saint-Michel, the steps up into the old town.

Don't visit Menton's old town after midday.

On my last visit in September I was on the Rampes Saint-Michel at 9 and again at 11, and there was room to stop for a photo both times. By the afternoon there were ten other people at every turn. I've seen it the same way on plenty of other afternoons, as the day-trippers arrive by train from Nice and the rest of the Riviera.

If you're planning ahead, avoid February too. Over 200,000 visitors come for the Fête du Citron, which in 2027 runs from 13 to 28 February.

Menton's old town is stacked up the hill above the sea, and the streets narrow quickly. So when I drive in, I leave the car on the seafront below it, at Parking Vieille Ville – Sablettes.

When I went in September, I was surprised how easy it was, both to find the car park and to find a space.

First 30 minutes free, €4.70 for two hours, €16.20 for the day (standard rate, checked 5 October 2026). There's a 2 m height limit, so it won't take a camper van. From the car park it's two minutes on foot to the bottom of the Rampes Saint-Michel, and the climb into the old town starts there.
