The 4th of July is not only a special day for the USA, it is also the birthday of one Nice's biggest heroes, Giuseppe Garibaldi. Garibaldi is known as the hero that unified Italy in 1861, he also stood up against slavery and was known as the hero of 2 worlds. Behind his back his home town was given to Nice in an illegal vote, in exchange for France's help in the Italian unification. 160 years later, there is still a group of Nicois that wish for independance from France. It is apt to chose the US independance day & Garibaldi's birthday to announce their own president... The President of the "Republica de Nissa" announcing their new president on the 4th of July in front of Garibaldi's statue.
