A wonderful day out on the Oise (Picardy)/Seine Maritme border. Firstly a tasty lunch at Le Coq Gaulois on the Treport/Beauvais road. Then we visited Gerboray, one of Le Beaux Villages de France. What made the day, was watching a car transporter with a trailer attached trying to negotiate his way out of the Medieval village!

One of the pleasures of being in France is a visit to the fish counter of supermarkets and fishmongers. There are always interesting displays of unusual fish and the usual array of wonderfully presented fresh fish. Goodness knows what they are. Any ideas?

Had a wonderful leisurely lunch on Wednesday at Le Comptoir Bleu at Long in the Somme. Lovely restaurant and Tea Room overlooking the River Somme. Two courses and drinks for 47 euros. The restaurant serves Picarde cuisine. Poulet aux marolles and tarte au figues / cafe gourmand were our choices.

Today we visited the church in Humieres. A real mixture of the old and the new. We were lucky to find it open as many of the villages in this area share a priest. Beautiful new Chancel with the Nave with its historic architecture. There is a small side chapel that has the memorial stones of the Marquis' of the Chateau in the village. Their tombs are under the stone floor.

Lovely visit to Pont Remy and the valley of the River Somme. As we entered the village we came across a British Cemetery beautifully maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. There was a clearing hospital at Pont Remy during WWI and the servicemen came from all branches of the armed forces, Most of the 54 headstones recorded deaths from 1917 - 1919. The view of the local countryside shows the terrain of the area that will not have changed much over the decades. Abbeville is not far away and 45% of that town was destroyed during the conflict. As you travel around the Somme, Picardy and Artois you come across many such cemeteries. The wildflower hedge is made up of red poppies, the symbol for the British fallen and blue cornflowers the symbol of the French fallen.

A great day in Rouen, Normandy. After a light lunch in the open air we visited the Cathedral - Notre Dame de Rouen. Most of the cathedral was demolished in the Second World War and has been gradually rebuilt over the years. You can still visit the oldest part of the town that was spared. All of the buildings between the cathedral and the River Seine was destroyed and left to burn in May of 1940. The journey takes about 2 hours from Humieres.

What a fantastic day. Clear blue sky with a slight breeze - thank goodness! Leaves rustling and 'Boss' the neighbour's dog barking in the distance. So peaceful. The old 'Gite de France sign left behind by previous owners looks good on the back of the gite.

Happy days! Lounging in the garden.
