Overcoming an unexpected roadblock: a smart car's journey to approval

When Vince Santini tried to register his right-hand drive Mercedez-Benz smart car in France, the last thing he needed was having to deal with unexpected roadblocks. However, this was the situation he faced after contacting the regional authorities responsible for approving vehicles in Normandy – DREAL. So, Vince turned to Martin Swanson of MyFrenchVA after DREAL denied his application. Martin, bilingual in French and English, has lived in France for more than 20 years and is well accustomed to dealing with the complexities of French bureaucracy.

What was the problem Vince faced?

Several technical aspects needed addressing, including the right-hand drive vehicle's headlights, measuring its weight, the speedometer, and odometer. While most of these issues were resolved successfully, the rear-view mirrors presented a particularly thorny issue, requiring a Certificate of Conformity for driving on the right-hand side of the road.

Further, significant delays were also due to Mercedes. Although Vince paid over 300€ for an inspection, they seemed to drag out providing the outstanding information. This made a stressful situation even worse.

The road to securing approval

To resolve the matter, Martin contacted the relevant DREAL official and quickly established a rapport to smooth the path to approval. Martin approached Mercedes Benz, the car's manufacturer, who directed him to a technician at the dealer network in Brittany. This led to Vince making a journey to Rennes to meet with a company representative – which initially appeared to have done the job, as they issued a document confirming the car's conformity to French driving regulations. However, a crucial detail was missing: the exact wording referencing Circulation à droite 2003/97/CE 10 novembre 2003. Consequently, DREAL rejected the document – and Vince still needed approval to drive his car in France.

Perseverance finally pays off….
Undeterred, Martin persevered, contacting the manufacturers once more.

Following a successful inspection of the vehicle for its Contrôle Technique (CT), a further meeting with DREAL proceeded smoothly – resulting in Vince receiving his much-awaited approval to legally drive his smart car in France.

Couple wins battle with windows and doors company thanks to MyFrenchVA

Crit'Air is a French environmental label that was introduced in 2016 to help reduce air pollution in cities. It is a sticker that must be displayed on all vehicles in certain cities in France, based on the emission category of the vehicle. The sticker ranges from Crit'Air 1 (the green sticker, the least polluting) to Crit'Air 5 (the black sticker, the most polluting).

Cities in France with low air quality can impose temporary restrictions on certain categories of vehicles during periods of high pollution. These restrictions can range from a ban on certain vehicle categories during specific times of day, to a complete ban on all vehicles except those displaying a Crit'Air 1 sticker.

Penalties for not displaying a valid Crit'Air sticker can range from a fine of up to €135 for cars to €750 for commercial vehicles.

Autoentrepreneurs and the letters EI – what changed on the 15th May 2022.

On the 15th of May 2022 a new law came into effect to offer Autoentrepreneurs (Sole Traders) protection for their personal assets from creditors.

Until that date, creditors could attach their personal assets (with the exception of their primary residence) to settle any debts. Typically autoentreprenuers opted for the EIRL (Entrepreneur Individuel à Responsabilité Limitée) for such protection.

Today, every Autoentrepreneur has to add EI (Entreprise Individual) to:
- The name of their bank account (First Name, Last Name, EI)
- Website
- Order Forms
- Quotations
- Invoices
- Adverts
- Business Stamps

If you are an autoentrepreneur and your bank account name doesn’t include the letters EI – you could face a fine of € 750.

Getting French Nationality has never been easier if you are a freelancer.

President Macron has chosen Élisabeth Borne as his new prime minister.

Ms Borne is the second female prime minister France has ever had. Her appointment just before the legislatives is a strategic move by Macron to shore up votes under threat from a uniting left under Melenchon. Unlike the previous two Prime Ministers who were rooted in the right of French politics, Ms Borne comes from the socialist left.

She has already held the posts of Minister of Labour, Employment and Economic Inclusion and has some wins in negotiating with the trade unions. She has also served as Minister of the Ecological and Inclusive Transition and Minister of Transport.
