🇫🇷 Sunday Spotlight: Paris
⏱️ 3 minute read.

Few cities in the world feel as instantly recognisable, or as effortlessly stylish, as Paris.

From grand boulevards and iconic monuments to tiny neighbourhood cafés and world-class museums, Paris is a city that rewards both first-time visitors and those returning again and again.

I’ve been lucky enough to visit several times over the years and every trip reveals another layer of this endlessly fascinating city.

🏛️ Iconic Paris

Some places in Paris truly live up to their reputation.

You can stand beneath the glittering lights of the Eiffel Tower, climb to the top of the Arc de Triomphe for one of the best panoramic views in Europe, or wander through the 8 miles (yes really!) of masterpieces inside the Louvre.

The city is also home to some of the most beautiful art museums anywhere, including the stunning Musée d’Orsay, set inside a former railway station, and the fascinating Picasso Museum.

One of my favourite cultural experiences was visiting the Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams Exhibition, which celebrates the history and glamour of the legendary Paris fashion house. It perfectly captures how deeply fashion and artistry are woven into the fabric of this fabulous city.

And of course there’s the magnificent Notre-Dame Cathedral, standing proudly on the Île de la Cité…… a powerful reminder of the city’s history and resilience. You can visit again following g the extensive refurbished after the fire a few years back.

🎨 Neighbourhoods that make Paris special

Beyond the headline landmarks, it’s the arrondissements (neighbourhoods) that truly bring Paris to life.

Wander the artistic streets of Montmartre, where painters still set up their easels near the hilltop basilica of Sacré-Cœur, and you’ll find sweeping views across the rooftops of the city.

Another place that left a lasting impression on me was Père Lachaise Cemetery. It’s one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world. Peaceful, atmospheric and filled with winding paths, statues, elaborate architecture and the resting places of cultural icons such as Jim Morrison, Edith Piaf and Oscar Wilde.

For a quieter moment, the elegant Luxembourg Gardens are perfect for a stroll or simply sitting with a coffee while watching Parisian life go by.

🛍️ Paris shopping (the glamorous kind)

Paris is also one of the world’s great shopping cities.

The grand boulevards are home to spectacular historic department stores like Galeries Lafayette Haussmann and Printemps, famous for their breathtaking glass domes, rooftop views and beautifully curated fashion floors.

Then there’s the beautifully restored La Samaritaine, which has reopened as one of the most stunning luxury shopping spaces in Europe.

Even if you’re just window-shopping, it’s impossible not to admire the effortless style of the the famously chic Parisiennes who somehow make looking elegant appear completely natural.

🍷 Food, wine and simple pleasures

Paris is also about slowing down and enjoying life.

Think buttery croissants, delicate pastries, rich French sauces and beautifully simple bistro dishes….. all paired with excellent wine.

One of my favourite simple pleasures is walking along the banks of the Seine with a fresh croissant or pan au chocolate and a café au lait in hand at the start of the day.

And if you want to see the city from a different perspective, a boat trip along the river Seine, whether a sightseeing cruise or even the commuter ferry, gives you a wonderful view of the historic bridges and riverside landmarks.

My favourite time to visit Paris is the 3rd week in November for Beaujolais Nouveau Day, when cafés and wine bars across the city celebrate the arrival of the year’s first Beaujolais. The atmosphere is fantastic.

🚆 Getting there from the UK

Paris is one of the easiest European city breaks to reach from the UK.

You can take the Eurostar from London St Pancras International directly to Gare du Nord in around 2 hours 20 minutes, which is often the most relaxing and convenient way to arrive.

There are also frequent flights from across the UK into Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport and Paris Orly Airport, making Paris an easy option for a long weekend or short break.

🚇 Getting around & where to stay

Once you arrive, the excellent Paris Métro makes it incredibly easy to explore the city.

Some of the best areas to stay include:

• Le Marais – historic streets, boutiques and fantastic restaurants
• Saint-Germain-des-Prés – classic Parisian cafés and culture
• The Latin Quarter – lively and full of character
• Opéra / Grands Boulevards – perfect for shopping and transport links

Each offers a slightly different flavour of the city, but all put you within easy reach of the sights.

Paris works beautifully for:
✨ romantic escapes
✨ culture-packed city breaks
✨ food and wine lovers
✨ art and architecture enthusiasts

It’s one of those rare cities that manages to feel grand, intimate, historic and modern all at the same time. Every visit makes you long to plan the next one. For me, I’m hoping to return in November!

✈️ A Real Travel Lesson From Yesterday

My husband (Tech Genius) was due to fly home from London City to Edinburgh on the BA 6pm flight yesterday.

At 5:30pm it was cancelled due to fog and he was automatically moved onto the 19:45 flight. The departure board was already showing that one delayed until 11pm.

Based on experience, I suggested to him to leave the airport and head straight to King’s Cross.

Why?
When fog rolls into London City and cancellations start, it often escalates quickly and flights can end up grounded until the next day.

So instead of waiting around hoping for the best, he:

🚆 Took the DLR and Underground to King’s Cross
🚆 Caught the 19:30 LNER train to Edinburgh

He managed to grab a First Class ticket for £104, which meant a comfy seat, a hot meal and drinks all the way home.

Meanwhile… the flight he’d been rebooked onto was pushed to 00:45, then cancelled completely. Passengers were moved to a 06:20 flight via Heathrow the next morning, which was then cancelled too.

What could have been a very long night at the airport and a possible unnecessary trek to Heathrow turned into a 4 hour 9 minute relaxing train journey.

He walked through our front door in Edinburgh at 11:45pm.

Sometimes travel decisions aren’t about sticking with the original plan — they’re about knowing when to change it.

That kind of judgement only really comes from experience.

For anyone interested in the official rules around delays and cancellations, BA explains them here:

Tell me in the comments if you’ve found yourself in a similar delay / cancellation situation. What did you do? What would you differently if it happened again? 👇🏼

✈️ Travel Truth Tuesday

I very rarely book a connection with an hour (or less) between flights.

Yes, it might be “legal”.
No, it’s rarely relaxing.

Recently I connected at Heathrow for a flight to Vienna.

On paper? Fine.
In reality?
• Terminal change
• Bus transfer
• Security again
• Long corridors
• Boarding already in progress

I made it.
With minutes to spare.

And that was with everything running more or less on time.

One small delay and that connection would have been gone.

When I plan long-haul trips, I build in breathing space.
Because your holiday shouldn’t start with a sprint and a stress headache.

Tight connections save minutes.
Smart planning protects your trip.

Planning something complex for 2026? Message me “PLAN” and I’ll sanity-check it for you.

If you’ve ever missed a connection, tell me about it in the comments- I’d love to guess the airport! 👇🏼

Amalfi Coast (and Beyond) – Done Properly

When people say “Amalfi”, what they usually mean is this whole spectacular stretch of southern Italy, from Naples and Pompeii down through Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, Capri and Ischia.

🍋 Lemon groves
🌊 Turquoise water
🍝 Incredible food
🏛 Ancient Roman history
🍸 Aperitivo with a view

I’ve visited this area several times over the last 30 years, and my husband and I spent a week here as part of our honeymoon in 2022. It remains one of my absolute favourite European destinations.

Why it works so well for couples and families….

You can combine Roman ruins, island hopping, beach clubs, boat days, vineyard visits and relaxed piazza evenings, all within a relatively compact region. It’s scenic, but it’s also layered and interesting.

Naples gives you authentic Italy (and the best pizza you’ll ever eat).
Pompeii is genuinely jaw-dropping, walking Roman streets frozen in time.
Positano & Amalfi bring the drama and pastel postcard views.
Capri & Ischia offer glamour or laid-back thermal spa vibes, depending on your mood.

The Smart Way to Do It…….

The region is extremely beautiful, but it can be crowded and expensive if you move around too much.

We based ourselves in Sorrento for a week and it was perfect:
• Easier access from Naples
• Better hotel value than Positano
• Great train + ferry connections
• Lively but less chaotic evenings

From there we explored by boat:
🚤 Positano & Amalfi
🚤 Ischia
🚤 A full loop around Capri

And here’s the key insight…. the coastline is at its absolute best from the water. You skip the traffic, see the towns from their most iconic angle, and actually relax.

We finished with two nights in Naples, stopping at Pompeii on the way, which rounded the trip off perfectly with culture, energy and phenomenal food.

The Food & Wine……

This region is flavour-led and unfussy. Proper Neapolitan pizza. Fresh seafood. Buffalo mozzarella. Lemon ‘everything’. Espresso and sfogliatella in the morning. Limoncello at sunset.

Campania is also an underrated wine region; volcanic Lacryma Christi near Vesuvius, crisp Falanghina and Greco di Tufo inland. Vineyard visits here feel authentic rather than polished, often with sweeping views across the Bay of Naples. We managed to shoehorn in a trip to a fantastic vineyard north of Sorrento called Cantina Del Vesuviano where we enjoyed not only a tour, but also an exciting rooftop lunch experience!

If you plan your trip to Amalfi well, you avoid:
– Constant hotel changes
– Overcrowded buses
– Paying premium prices for impractical bases

Using Sorrento area as a hub + boat days + Naples at the end was our winning formula.

If Italy is on your list for 2026, this stretch of coastline is very hard to beat 🇮🇹

I’ll follow this up shortly with an example package break for two to show how this could look in reality….. flights, hotel and smart routing included.

If you’d like help planning something similar (without the stress or guesswork), just drop me a message 💛

I seriously LOVE a weekend in Amsterdam and I LOVE saving money…..

Last night I booked 3 nights for myself and the Tech Genius using my travel portal, and saved £110 on our hotel. I’ve also booked a cool little boat trip through the canals with wine and beer and I saved £20 on that - again through my travel portal.

Amsterdam is the best - effortlessly boujie, all leaning canal houses, golden façades and chic locals gliding by on bikes. It’s architecturally stunning, cool without trying, packed with art, design and great food, and has that playful, slightly decadent energy that makes it ridiculously fun. I’ve been 7 times since I was 23 and I can’t wait to go back in just 23 sleeps!

Where are you thinking for your next city break? Maybe I could help to choose or book? Xx
