First time and learning :-) I'm trying to figure out how not to include that huge black circle for next time. ☺️😍

I've just discovered the works of the artist, Elisée Maclet (1881-1962, and I'm loving them. Don't you also think they're splendid? The expressive colours, the clear drawing lines, the fresh take on urban landscape. Just beautiful!

Renault test-driving his Voiturette A in Montmartre

Imagine that you've created a company which became hugely successful. However, decades afterwards, you made one horrible mistake and found yourself in jail for it, but you died before you could defend yourself. In the aftermath, your bereaved had to capitulate to the government as they expropriate the company that you had created.

That's what happened to Renault. Since the end of the WW2 until today, Renault is owned by the French state.

Louis Renault, its creator, was accused of collaborating with the N**i Vichy Regime and was subsequently punished very heavily after the war whereby the French government confiscated the Renault enterprise. A very heavy-handed punishment perhaps that other collaborators were lucky enough to evade?

And well, anyway, Montmartre has something to do with the beginnings of Renault. It was here, in 24th Dec 1898, that the young Louis Renault test-drove his voiturette, up along Rue Lepic, and managed to stir the curiosity of the crowd. It was in Montmartre that he got himself his first dozen orders, and the rest, as they say is history.

Yesterday, I was in communication with someone on Facebook who was selling her two tickets to the Moulin Rouge for this evening. She was offering both tickets to me for 280€ including half a bottle of champagne each (she paid 360€ but now could not go) Call me naïve but I thought it was a good deal and I would have gone for it were it not for the other half who claims to be allergic to dance and thus was not keen (doh!)

Anyhow.….The Moulin Rouge

There were already a few cabarets in operation in the 19th century when the Moulin Rouge opened in 1889. Amazingly it’s one of the rare few that still opens its doors today as a cabaret and still dancing the can-can.

Indeed, the Moulin Rouge is known as the birthplace of the modern can-can. Can-can as it’s known today is a vigorously active dance of chorus girls standing on a line and performing their synchronized high kicks and splits. Originally, it's said to be danced as couples in quadrilles in the early-to-mid 1800’s. In the early years of its opening, the Moulin Rouge popularised the can-can thanks to their celebrated star dancers like La Gouloue (more of La Gouloue in future posts).

At the time, it was quite controversial because what did women wear in the late 1800’s?- the petticoats! And with petticoats, it’s known that the crotch section is open, meaning there’s a purposeful hole in the middle part so that it’s convenient for when the toilet business is necessary. So you can imagine the can-can dancers performing their kicks up in the air!

However, according to what I’ve been reading, the Moulin Rouge does not appear to have their dancers perform with such petticoats and vulgarity .... So that's ok then :-)
