“A lot of times, with the efforts that we put into things, we don’t necessarily see the results. But with this, I could make a difference in at least one person’s life.”

In the weeks after Russia invaded Ukraine, Mary—an American living in Berlin—knew she wanted to do something to help. When she saw Airbnb.org’s call to action online, she listed her apartment free of charge.

Soon after, Dima arrived to stay for two weeks. A man in his 20s, Dima was living in Kyiv when Russians began bombing the city. A grassroots organization named Safebow helped Dima and his hairless cat, Peach, travel through Poland to Berlin. There, Airbnb.org’s partner the Organization for Refuge, Asylum, and Migration (ORAM) helped him find housing and register for social services.

After a trip filled with obstacles, arriving at Mary’s apartment was a relief for Dima and they immediately clicked. They spent hours at her kitchen table, sharing meals and drinking beers, and stayed in touch after he moved into another apartment.

“It was a gigantic boost to my start here,” Dima says.

Mary and Dima’s story is just one of thousands. Airbnb.org’s global community has shown us the difference one person can make.

Meet virtual human imma (.gram) who “lives” in her own parallel world between the real and the virtual. imma’s signature bubblegum pink bob and bangs established her appeal as a model for multiple global brands. Now, she is focused on developing her own exclusive virtual fashion line. Imma started posting to Instagram in 2018; her use of the hashtag reflects her existential crisis.

“She feels that her not being in the physical world, or being ‘human’ is something she ‘lacks,’” says Producer M of Aww Inc., the agency behind imma and a family of virtual humans, including Zinn (), who’s imma’s brother, and his girlfriend Ria ().

“imma loves the uniqueness of Japan, and we feel the buzz and potential of the Japanese culture. We are always looking to create something that the world has not yet seen in the fashion industry, and imma is the center of that effort. imma has the chance to converse with fashion designers in Japan and also the world through her modeling and personal life. She wants to bring all those values into her expression.”
