The Watts Towers Rise From a Neighborhood (1920s–1950s)

For more than three decades, Italian immigrant Simon Rodia quietly built an extraordinary group of towers in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Using steel, concrete and discarded objects such as broken pottery, glass and shells, he constructed the structures almost entirely by hand.

Rodia worked without conventional architectural plans, gradually transforming his small property into an enormous personal artwork.

Neighbors watched the unusual towers rise higher and higher over the years.

When Rodia finally walked away from the project in the 1950s, he left behind one of Los Angeles's most unusual landmarks.
