Today we are excitedly anticipating the arrival of our guests. They will be coming in from Dijon shortly and we are looking forward to our voyage. After leaving Saint Jean de Lonse we travelled to Seurre a beautiful little village on the banks of the Saone. It was interesting to see the recent investments that they have made in their port. It is large enough to receive river cruise ships. You can see the economic growth that these investments have created for the village.

Next we arrived in Chalon sur Saone….ancient port city dating back to before the Romans. We are moored in the city port which is across the way from the old walled fortress. This town is a perfect restocking point for our travels. Good train access, bus service and great access to shopping. More to come…

From Dijon we move on to Saint Jean de Losne our home port for Relax Companion. We have a few days to get the boat ready for our guests. Flowers are blooming, smell of lilacs in the air. People are out and about enjoying cafes and parks. Spring is lovely in Burgundy!

We made it back to the ancient city of Dijon with mostly minor travel delays and complications. 18 minutes to get through customs which I will call a win. EES biometric system was sitting idle so that was much ado about not much. 67 degrees and back in France, Dinner reservations booked…so far so good!

Our friends that are interested in traveling with us in Spring of 2027 have been asking about life on the canal and what it is like. The video collage attached below was created by David Devere of Savvy Nomad fame. The video depicts our travel across NE France as we move the boat from Strasbourg to Burgundy. Fun and interesting travel. We still have space left if you would like to join us.

Our canal trip from Strasbourg to Saint-Jean-de-Losne in the early summer of 2025. We traveled 671km and transited 231 locks, 6 tunnels and one boat lift!

An invitation to join us for adventure

As I am going through our photos from last years trips I am struck by how blessed we are to be able to take our friends/guests on these amazing canal boating adventures through rural France. Traveling by Canal Boat offers a way to see the country from an old and less traveled perspective. We glide quietly through landmark cities, small villages and the rolling countryside. Every town we pass through is approached from the 17th century “back door.”
Have you ever thought of traveling by canal in a foreign country? Neither had we! 10 years ago Carla and I decided we wanted to see for ourselves what some of our adventurous friends had been taking about. After our first trip, we were hooked by the culture, history, food and countryside. We have been eagerly going back ever since.
Would you like to travel through France in a canal boat? Rick and Carla (RC Travel) are hosting three, one-week tours in May 2027. This could be your chance to enjoy a unique travel experience with a small group of adventurous individuals. Carla and I host 4 guests each week. Our boat has 3 unique private staterooms, each with its own “Head” (bathroom and shower).
As a guest on our boat, you will also be an active, participating crew member, helping us navigate the ancient locks and canals. You will also enjoy a mix of dining experiences both on the boat and at local restaurants.
Our boat is currently located in the famous Burgundy region of France. Burgundy is an historic and culturally rich territory in east-central France, famous world wide for its prestigious wines, medieval heritage and rolling landscapes. It is also considered by many to be the gastronomic center of France. Burgundy food is rich, rustic French cuisine famous for red wine-based dishes like Beef Bourguignon and Coq au Vin, along with specialties like Dijon mustard, charcuterie, pungent cheeses (Époisses), escargots, and Bresse chicken. These foods highlight the region's high-quality local ingredients and deep culinary traditions.
If you are interested or just curious, we would love to share more information and our passion for boating in France. We can be reached at [email protected]

We have said Au revior to our first group of guests. What a team! We traveled from Dijon through Dole to Besancon…
oh the places you’ll go! Over the last 2 plus weeks we have traveled through this beautiful country full of interesting and helpful people. Just yesterday I realized that we were nearly out of propane for the boat. David the manager at the port and his buddy Momo a taxi driver made arrangements for me to go to a local exchange to get 2 13kg tank’s exchanged. This may sound simple enough, but with my limited French and their limited English this became quite an adventure.
Today Carla and I are preparing for a new set of guests and new adventures. We are feeling honored and blessed to be traveling with these adventurous souls.
