Alan Jones WDC - MBE (1946–2026)
Farewell to an Aussie Giant: Remembering Alan Jones MBE (1946–2026)
Today the motorsport world bows its head in profound sorrow.
Formula 1® has lost one of its fiercest competitors, its truest characters, and an immortal of the asphalt: Alan Jones MBE, the 1980 World Drivers' Champion, who has passed away at the age of 80.
At Senate Grand Prix, this loss hits right at the heart of our family.
Over the years, we were blessed and privileged to welcome Alan to our exclusive Driver Meet & Greet events, often alongside fellow Williams World Champion Damon Hill for unforgettable Q&A sessions and what a pair to have two WDCs at an event like this. The stories of sold skool F1® were fascinating.
Out of all the racing legends we have ever hosted, AJ stood in a league of his own.
He gave you his full attention, looked you straight in the eye, listened intently, and shared the unfiltered truth about what it took to wrestle a ground-effect Formula 1® car to a World Championship.
He loved to laugh; he loved to tell stories, and he had time for every single person in the room.
It captured everything about the sport’s golden era and everything about Alan's wonderful sense of humour.
From Melbourne Grit to Sir Frank’s First Champion
Before he was a legend, Alan Jones had to fight tooth and nail just to be noticed in motorsport.
Leaving Melbourne with barely two pennies to rub together, he took the hard road through Europe, sleeping in vans, buying second-hand machinery, and proving his speed through sheer grit and tenacity.
When Sir Frank Williams and Patrick Head were building their fledgling outfit, they found their ultimate warrior in Jones. Tough, uncompromising, and blisteringly fast, Alan didn’t just drive the Williams FW07; he wrestled it into submission, claiming five victories in 1980 to bring Frank Williams his maiden World Championship.
He set the hard-nosed DNA of Williams Grand Prix Engineering that lasted for decades.
A Toast to an Immortal
Having just celebrated his 80th birthday earlier this week, Alan lived to see Formula 1®'s 36th World Champion crowned in Kimi Antonelli. But in the pantheon of motorsport legends, Alan’s place in history is permanently etched in gold.
Today, receiving his family's message to "have a drink on Alan" was the most fitting tribute imaginable. No pomposity, no fuss, just a relaxed Aussie with a cracking laugh, a giant heart, and an immortal legacy. To Alan’s wife Amanda, his children, his family, and his countless friends worldwide, everyone at Senate Grand Prix extends our deepest, most heartfelt condolences.
Raise a glass today for a true world champion, a wonderful storyteller, and an unforgettable friend. Rest in peace, AJ.
