David Burke's "Writers in Paris" Walking Tours

David Burke's "Writers in Paris" Walking Tours "Writers in Paris" Literary Walking Tour is an ambulatory exploration of the haunts of Hemingway, Orwell, Scott Fitzgerald, Hugo, Zola, among many others.

Time Out says it best:
"The background to many a Paris pilgrimage is the city's literary history. Visitors will willingly pay over the odds for a coffee or cocktail at the Café de Flore, happy in the knowledge that de Beauvoir and Sartre used it as a second home in the 40s and 50s, and benches in the Jardin de Luxembourg heave with Hemingway fans (though they're probably less hungry than Hem w

as as he struggled to make ends meet in the 1920s). There's no better way to go deeper into the rich – and often riotous – literary history of Paris than in the company of David Burke, an expat documentary filmmaker and author who has made Paris his home for over a quarter of a century. His book 'Writers in Paris' offers a knowledgeable, accessible history of the lives of writers from Proust to Beckett – and anyone visiting Paris has the chance to get the stories from the horse's mouth. From Jean Rhys's escapades with the 'Lost Generation' in Montparnasse in the 1920s to the beat poet Paris of Alan Ginsberg, the tours are unfailingly well-researched, personal – groups are limited to ten or less, so book ahead – and inspiring. David runs a schedule of set walks on Sunday mornings, but is happy to take requests for other days and itineraries as well – visit his website (http://writersinpariswalkingtours.blogspot.fr) for full details and to book."

It's with great sadness that we give a last long wave to our friend and colleague, David Burke.
I met him first in 2012 when he and his wife/life partner/creative team-mate Joanne were starting out making what would become their much appreciated documentary series on African Americans in the City of Light, and films 'Paris Noir' and 'Fighting For Respect'.

They'd chosen Paris over New York in 1986 and David packed an impressive resume : Yale graduate, producer for CBS's '60 Minutes'. Together they formed their Blue Lion Film company and traveled the world, bringing to light stories of innovative women from SouthEast Asia, Africa, South America.
David wielded the camera and an eloquent pen. He also wrote several travel books, including the highly praised 'Writers in Paris', which evolved into wonderful tours that always lasted longer than the brochure said - people just kept hanging onto his every word and story. I still refer to his book when I need the nitty-gritty on this city of literary lights.
Illness took him out of the spotlight these past few years but I hold fast to the memory of this man who was so affable, warm, kind, mentally nimble, and fun-loving.
Until we meet again, Friend.

We have lost a beautiful and talented spirit. Loved this great man.
