There is so much to see at Versailles and when you are emerging from confinement, everything takes on greater significance and even poignancy. The plan d’eau in front of the hall of mirrors wasn’t cleaned for two months and looks abandoned. The gardens emptiness is eerie, and yet it enables you to take in more of the beauty and sense of detail. Louis wrote a guidebook on visiting his garden and I hope to quote from it when my guests are able to return. @ Jardins du Château de Versailles

Even Louis would agree that the highlight of a visit to Versailles is a walk through its gardens, and when possible when the fountains are flowing and the baroque music is blaring. Of course there are no flowers planted and the grass needs mowing— it the beautiful design remains unscathed and the chateau staff is busy making up for lost time.

Today, I ventured out of Paris for my first post-confinement visit of Versailles state apartments and gardens. With only 300 people allowed per hour during the week, the visit is surprisingly pleasant. The thousands of Asian and American and European hordes are absent and the few photos I took show that. The entrance ticket is 18€ and includes the Trianons which we skipped. The gardens with fountains set to music are 11€ per adult. The visit no longer includes the apartments of the princesses on the ground floor nor the chapel which is being renovated. Good news: there are no lines for the bathrooms and they are clean. Other good news: there is now a special mention for the battle of Yorktown with Washington and Rochambeau as top guns and poor Lafayette hidden in the shadows... @ Château de Versailles

Île de Ré is my first go to paradise this June and I am taking this occasion to share some photos taken during our stay. If you love authenticity, environmentalist and historic preservation and fine food and wine without chichis, the island is an affordable haven from the world’s current madness. They also have the biggest TinTin store for those who are fans.fr @ Saint-Martin-de-Ré

Another charming and not to be missed village that inspired the first outdoor painting movement in France. Monet, Millet, Rousseau, and many others set up their easels in or near this town which runs into Fontainebleau forest. We owe it to Theodore Rousseau that the woods of Fontainebleau were saved from destruction. Now their paintings have been transformed into mosaics that line the town’s walls. Another place to see either by car or by boarding a train. Beauty less than 100 km from Paris. Great artisanal ice cream as well! Looking forward to going there with guests ASAP

Loved rediscovering this beautifully preserved town in Seine et Marne, home of the Impressionist painter Alfred Sisley. Accessible by train as well as by car.

The Marais, which I first discovered in June 1993, boasts over 150 listed buildings. Thanks to Andre Malraux, De Gaulle’s minister of culture, they were saved from the real estate developer and wanton destruction through the loi Malraux passed in 1964. Here is a sampling of what we saw this week during partial deconfinement. I took a closeup of the quarry stone which is 46 million years old and contains many fossils. The beamed and whitewashed interior was built in the 14th century. In those days, they floated oak trunks down the Seine and then dried them out for two years so they would be sturdy enough for the stone edifices that cover them. A lot of the buildings in Paris have oak foundations. @ Le Marais -Paris 4 ème
