Not every market in Provence is worth rearranging your itinerary for.

Some are known for food, others for antiques, local crafts or the great atmosphere. A few are genuine highlights of a trip, while others are better if they happen to fit your route.

I've put together a guide to the markets I think are most worth prioritising, along with when to go and what to expect. First comment 👇

One of my favourite things about Provence at this time of year isn't something you see, but something you smell.

Star jasmine is in flower, climbing over gates, stone walls and village houses, and its scent drifts through the streets as you walk. Sweet, rich and surprisingly strong, you often smell it well before you see it.

It's one of those small details that make wandering through Provence in late spring and early summer so memorable 🤍

Montbrun-les-Bains is a compact hilltop village in the Drôme Provençale, with houses stacked along the ridge and Mont Ventoux on the horizon.

It’s best known for its thermal baths, but it’s also worth taking time for the old streets, small cafés and views from the upper village.

The walk to Crique de l’Aiguille comes with a few rewards along the way.

One of the best is this little cove tucked beneath the red Esterel cliffs, accessible only by boat or by swimming around from the neighbouring beach. Most people admire it from above as they follow the coastal path.

It’s a beautiful stretch of coastline, where the contrast between the rust-coloured rock and the clear Mediterranean water is hard to beat.

The Luberon's lavender fields are different from the vast landscapes around Valensole.

Here, the fields tend to appear between vineyards, below hilltop villages, or beside old stone farmhouses, making them feel more woven into the landscape rather than dominating it.

If you're planning a lavender trip this year, I've shared my favourite spots in the first comment 💜

The triangle between Aix, Avignon and the Luberon is full of villages that rarely make the guidebooks but have as much history and local life as any of the famous villages.

Alleins is one of them. A fortified settlement was established here as far back as the 10th century, and the old centre still wears its layers of history. It's a jumble of tight lanes, Renaissance façades, a ruined medieval château that crowns the village, and a distinctive windmill that has watched over the plain below for centuries. Worth a slow wander if you're in the area 🤍

Provence is easier to plan once you choose the right base.

Some places put you close to lavender fields and hilltop villages, others work better for Roman sites, markets, train links or day trips without too much driving.

I’ve shared a breakdown of where to stay depending on the kind of trip you’re planning in the first comment 👇

Hyères often gets treated as a gateway to the islands, but the town itself deserves some time.

There’s a beautiful old centre to explore, with winding streets, colourful façades, market squares and plenty of spots to stop for a drink or lunch. Then add in the castle ruins overlooking the coast, and it makes a great base for discovering this part of the Var.

My guide to visiting Hyères is below (first comment 👇)

A snapshot of life in Le Bar-sur-Loup.

I almost passed right by this village on my way to Gourdon, but I’m glad I didn’t! Known for its orange blossom (which is grown for the Grasse perfumeries), it’s an enchanting and artistic village that’s well worth a detour.

Climb up through the lanes, and reward yourself with a drink, or lunch, at the bistro at the top! 🍷
