Another fantastic historical attraction just a short drive away
The Lascaux Cave in the Dordogne holds some of the most extraordinary prehistoric art ever discovered. The paintings, created around 17,000 years ago, include over 600 animals such as horses, bulls, and stags, all painted with incredible detail and movement.
The original cave was closed in 1963 to protect the fragile artwork from damage, but today you can visit Lascaux IV, a state-of-the-art replica that recreates the cave’s paintings and atmosphere with stunning accuracy. The technology used means you see the art almost exactly as it would appear underground, without risking the originals.
It’s worth booking tickets in advance as this is one of the Dordogne’s most popular sites. Combine your visit with nearby towns like Montignac and Sarlat for a full taste of the region’s history and food.
