Thank you for sharing your Rwandan story Dear Amy.

A lot of people ask me why I’m so committed to Rwanda. The answer is complex but also personal. I've been spending time in Rwanda on and off for fourteen years.

In 2010, I decided to spend the next year abroad. I wasn't sure where, even if I knew why, which was deeply personal. At that point, I had traveled to a few countries for the National Democratic Institute (NDI) as a political trainer, and I hoped I might get a full-time assignment from them somewhere.

I honestly expected to return to Iraq, a program I'd been part of for a few years, but a close friend convinced me to expand my search and look for beautiful places specifically. Another friend with NDI who knew about my search reached out to see if I would consider Rwanda. At that moment, I only knew two things about the country from some news and two movies - Hotel Rwanda and Gorillas in the Mist. It's famous for its tragic Genocide against the Tutsis and the gorillas. It is still surprising to me today that I received an offer to go there as NDI's country director just 24 hours later.

Dr. Yohannes Zeleke is an archaeologist and anthropologist, former curator of the National Museum of Ethiopia and former research associate of the Russian Academy of Sciences Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunst-Kamera). He attended post-doctoral programs at UC Berkeley in Archaeology.

Currently, Dr. Zeleke is a research associate at the National Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution. Over the past several years he has been teaching at George Washington and American University as an adjunct professor. All his associate guides are well versed historians with an intricate knowledge of Washington, D.C.

Dr. Zeleke is a licensed tour guide with the highest qualification in Archaeology, History, and Anthropology both for Washington, D.C. and Africa.

On 7th April 2025, we have commemorated our beloved ones for the 31st time.The genocide against the tusti in Rwanda in 1994 was implemented and well-prepared to exterminate the tusti and other Rwandans who were against their diabolical plan.

I was 5 years old and I heard them several times call my father a "cockroach".
They dehumanized and killed my father, my mother, my brothers and many members of my family.

I am proud to grow up in Rwanda completely different from what my parents experienced.

Let's shout to the indifferent whites about their actions in 1994 that today in Rwanda we are united and we no longer speak of ethnicity.

Thank you to our President Paul Kagame and his government.

« A tous les sœurs et frères qui me font l'honneur de lire ce livre. Ce sont vos douleurs, ce sont vos résiliences, ce sont les vies des vôtres disparues, c'est le Rwanda tout entier qui me font écrire, avec ma propre expérience d'existence. La jeunesse a le droit de tout savoir, et nous avons, nous, le devoir d'apprendre d'elle. Car, si la mémoire avait vraiment existé, si la transmission avait vraiment eu cours, si l'éducation à la paix avait réussi, si l'Afrique aurait autant compté que les autres continents, le génocide perpétré contre les Tutsi n'aurait pas eu lieu. Il ne s'agit en rien de faire la leçon à la jeunesse, mais, comme parents, éducateurs, responsables politiques, d'essayer d'avancer avec elle sur le chemin de la vérité. Merci à vous »
