This is one of the most underrated luxury travel destinations. The Kingdom of Bhutan is a country in the Eastern Himalayas that offers incredible nature and rich culture. They emphasize high value, low volume tourism, so there’s an annual visitor quota, everyone pays a daily fee of $100, and you must be accompanied by a guide throughout your trip.

✈️ How do you get there?

International flights land at Paro International airport, which is most well served by flights from Bangkok and Delhi. Once you’re there, you’ll travel mostly by car.

🗺️ What’s the route?

Bhutan’s most common tourism route takes you through 5 valleys of differing elevations and landscapes. Most trips we plan start in Thimphu and end in Paro.

⏱️ How long do you go for?

We recommend at least 7 nights on the ground, but if you want to see all 5 valleys, you’ll want to stretch it to 10-12 days.

🛌 Where do you stay?

Bhutan offers truly luxe lodging experiences with wonderful amenities. Six Senses and Aman both have lodges in all 5 valleys, while other brands and independent hotels have a presence as well.

As the saying goes - health is wealth. And since running a travel business means we’re plugged in at all hours of the day, 7 days a week, we thought a wellness reset would be a great way to ring in another year around the sun.

The Ranch at Hudson Valley is the second permanent location of the famous Malibu wellness retreat, or bootcamp, depending on who you ask. It’s set in a beautiful mansion with 26 restored guestrooms, a ballroom that’s been converted into a fitness studio, and stunning wellness spaces.

By day, we took hikes in the area, had daily massages, and attended fitness classes. All alongside 20 other people who we went through the experience with together. It’s a very schedule and group-oriented experience that was honestly really fun to be a part of since everyone had different backgrounds and stories to tell.

This reset was exactly what we needed. The Ranch team took such great care of us and more than anything, it was a reminder of the habits we want to drift towards, not away from.

Our final Dolomites trip hotel! If the Dolomites are on your list and you want to get a little further out from the towns, this was such an amazing place to stay. The access is unparalled, and there are so many amenities that make the hotel itself a really great luxury stay.

Como Alpina Dolomites is located in Alpe di Siusi, Europe’s largest high alpine meadow. It’s a true hike-in/hike-out in the summer and ski-in/ski-out in the winter. There are multiple restaurants, a spa, pool, and even a kids club. But the best amenity here might just be the access to nature.

It might not seem like it from social media, but Naturhotel Forsthofgut is the perfect family resort in the Austrian Alps. We recently checked in to see what what kinderhotels are all about.

For kids over the age of 2, the kids club offers complimentary childcare, activities, and even supervised meals. For adults, a 4-story spa building includes an adults-only pool and multiple saunas.

A highlight here was the food, which was so fresh. Breakfast and a 5-course dinner were included in the stay.

Despite being packed with families in the summer, we thought the team here operated smoothly and really delivered a high standard of service. Yes, lots of our videos look empty but we were trying to film early in the morning or later in the evenings!

If you’re looking at the World’s 50 Best Hotels list, forget the individual rankings which always raise eyebrows. Instead we took a macro look at the destinations that are dominating the world’s best 100 hotels.

Our takeaway? There are two main ways onto this list. Either you’re a great hotel in an already-famous destination, or it’s an obscure location but the hotel itself has become the reason to go. Regardless, the list risks becoming a reflection of marketing and word of mouth as much as hotel quality, compounded by wherever the voting body happens to have the most firsthand experience. After all, they can only vote for hotels they’ve physically stayed at in the last 3 years.

The top 3 country destinations are Italy at 15 hotels, Japan at 11 hotels, and France at 10 hotels. And they all represent one of those two categories. Already popular regions and destinations like Italy’s Amalfi Coast, Japan’s Golden Route, or the South of France. And the rest embody “the hotel is the destination” in far flung corners where online virality has certainly helped shine a light on once hidden gems.

On the other end of the spectrum, take the countries or continents that have been flattened into representation by singular cities (Thailand by Bangkok, or Africa by Marrakech and Cape Town). We can only assume there isn’t enough of a global industry spotlight and personal voter experience with places like Northern Thailand or the many luxury safari lodges across Africa when compared to the major cities.

What we see and don’t see reflected in the destinations on the list tells us that if it isn’t already well known enough to be on the voters’ collective radar, it has almost no shot at making the list, no matter how good the hotel is. So when the votes are tallied, we learn more about where the travel industry already has its eye than about where the best new discoveries actually are.
