In the 12th century, the Louvre was not a museum at all. It was a fortress, built by King Philippe Auguste to protect Paris from invasions. At that time, the city was much smaller, and the Seine River was right next to the wall. The original Louvre had thick stone walls, towers, and a moat filled with water. You can still see part of this old medieval wall in the museum’s basement today!

Later, in the 1500s, the fortress was no longer needed. Kings began turning it into a royal palace. New buildings were added with large windows, fancy rooms, and art collections. It slowly became a symbol of power and style, not just protection.

When the French Revolution happened in the late 1700s, the royal family was removed—and the Louvre was turned into a public museum. Instead of being a place only for kings, it became a place where everyone could see great works of art.

Today, the Louvre holds famous treasures like the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. It’s also famous for its modern glass pyramid entrance, added in 1989.
