On December 29, 1944, Easy Company was dug into the Bois Jacques, the woods outside Bastogne, staring across open fields at Foy and Noville.

Darrell "Shifty" Powers came in from an observation post and told 1st Sergeant Lipton that a tree near Noville hadn't been there the day before.

Lipton couldn't see anything unusual, even with binoculars, but Powers insisted.

Eventually Lipton spotted the "tree" move. It was German camouflage hiding an 88mm gun battery, and within the hour, artillery fire had wiped it out.

One thing that becomes clear when you visit the Bois Jacques is what kind of attention it took to notice something like that. The woods are dense and the sightlines are long, and Powers had memorized the treeline well enough to know exactly what didn't belong in it.

Standing there today, the distances make his eye for detail even harder to believe.

On July 4, 1945, the 101st Airborne was stationed in Zell am See, Austria, enjoying its first peacetime summer.

Colonel Sink planned a big Independence Day celebration, but rain washed out the fourth and fifth.

When the sun finally broke through on the sixth, the men threw a party they nicknamed "Sink on the Sixth," complete with gliders over the lake and a C-47 dropping twelve paratroopers into the water for fun.

One thing that becomes clear when you visit Zell am See is how much the setting itself explains the mood that summer. The lake, the mountains, the resort-town calm — it's easy to see why men who had just fought through Normandy and Bastogne treated this place like a reward.

Standing on the same lakeshore today, you can picture them finally exhaling.

War Is Hell: Running The Gauntlet

It is the eve of D-Day: June 5, 1944. Location: Upottery Airfield, England.

Paratroopers are encamped at airfields scattered across England, sealed inside by MPs. Nobody goes in. Nobody goes out. The largest invasion the world has ever seen is hours away, and every scrap of surprise could mean the difference between success and failure, between life and death.

One paratrooper escapes.

Not to warn anyone. Not for any heroic reason. To drink. He finds a pub, gets drunk, and starts telling the locals about the invasion.

The civilians call the authorities. The MPs collect him and bring him back to the airfield. Then they hand him over to his own company.

His First Sergeant, a former middleweight boxing champion from Tennessee, lines the company up in two parallel columns and makes the man run between them. He staggers down the line, hands over his face, crying, as men strike him.

"This son of a bitch," the First Sergeant shouts. "He'll get us all killed."

They beat him until he can hardly walk. Then they keep him under guard. When the planes load, they march him to the aircraft at gunpoint.

The next day, he is killed in action.

War is hell, as they say.

Hands Up, You're Surrounded

Not every story from the war happened on a famous battlefield.

Some of the best ones happened in places like this: a roofless barn somewhere in Holland, ankle-deep in water, in the middle of the night.

Late October 1944. Baker Company had just settled into one of these forgettable spots near Arnhem. The men were sitting on boxes to stay above the floodwater when a lone SS soldier walked through the door.

Six-foot-four. Black uniform. And he announced, in perfect English, that the barn was surrounded and they were now prisoners of the German Reich.

A forward observer in the corner pulled his pistol and shot him in the head.

The German's squad, waiting outside, heard the shot and ran back to their own lines.

One thing that becomes clear when you spend time in Holland is how much of the war happened in completely ordinary places. No monument marks them. No sign points the way. Just fields and farms that look more or less the same as they did in 1944.

The barn might be gone. The story isn't.
