An interesting excursion: tour of the vaults below the Edinburgh City Chambers as well as Mary Kings Close tour.

They sealed the doors in the 1820s and nobody went back.

For over 150 years, the stone chambers beneath South Bridge sat in complete darkness — left exactly as the last people abandoned them. Tools. Bones. Evidence of lives cut short or simply moved on.

What Norrie Rowan found in 1985 when he pushed open one of those doors was not just an empty vault. It was the other Edinburgh — the one that existed below the well-dressed streets, where cobblers and wine merchants and families with no other options tried to make a home in the damp.
