Today marks the anniversary of VJ Day, when the Second World War finally came to an end. This rare colour footage captures London’s streets on 15 August 1945, as war-weary souls greeted peace with cheers, flags, and candlelit vigils. The vintage film brings to life the palpable relief, spontaneous gatherings, and sheer emotion of a nation rising from conflict.

A heartfelt thank-you to Imperial War Museum London for preserving and sharing this priceless window into history.

As Londoners came together - embracing, laughing, and looking forward - this footage reminds us that victory wasn’t just a moment, but a movement of people reclaiming their future.

Before he became the Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley spent eight crucial years in India, where he learned the skills that would make him one of history’s greatest military commanders.

From the siege of the formidable fortress at Seringapatam to the fierce Battle of Assaye - considered by Wellington himself as his finest military achievement - India was the proving ground for a young officer testing his tactics and leadership under fire.

These campaigns were not just battles but complex operations requiring sharp logistics, local alliances, and strategic ingenuity. They shaped Wellington’s approach to warfare and prepared him for the challenges that awaited in Europe.

Experience the landscapes where these historic moments unfolded and uncover the stories behind the man who changed history.

Join us on the Wellington in India tour 24th October - 3rd November 2025 to walk in his footsteps, guided by expert historians bringing the past vividly to life.

Why would the Scots abandon Flodden Hill for Branxton Hill? This is the view from Branxton Hill looking SE to Flodden Hill: see the perfect glacis- like slope which provides a perfect killing ground for the Scottish guns. The English still have to march up Hill to attack. The Scots would have had more time to prepare. The only logical reason for abandoning this position would be if James was trying to run for home but got caught by the English on Branxton Hill.

The dastardly Earl of Surrey having outflanked James's formidable position on Flodden Hill, now cut off his lines of communication to Scotland and advanced upon the Scots from the north. Those poor old Scottish gunners now had to up sticks and drag their guns over this ground to place them on its highest point, Branxton Hill in anticipation of the English assault.

Our Story

The Cultural Experience based in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England, was formed by Alan Rooney in 2009 after turning his passion for history and travel into a business proposition.

The Company now employs a small team of travel professionals who plan and organise over 70 tours a year and has access to many more historians and academics to help deliver and guide the tours on the ground.

The company ethos is based on three principles:

  • Using sound research and planning to create a three dimensional version of history (human, time and space) - and to place the colourful characters and exciting events concerned at the very locations they came together.
