Ampthill Station closed in May 1959 despite objections from the local community and councillors. The station was operating at a £1,600 annual loss to British Rail. Data collected at the time showed there were about 60 Vauxhall workers, 10 students from Luton Technical College and just 30 others using the trains daily. The station also needed investment in buildings and a fourth platform for the coming faster diesel service, replacing steam.

Here are some original tickets from 1959, an earlier timetable from 1912 and a great picture of two of the station guards proudly gardening ❤️👻😀

Credit to Leonora Cottrells excellent book REMEMBERING AMPTHILL STATION she published in 1968. The guard picture is from the Bedfordshire Times and others from my own collection.

Check out the latest episode of Weird in the Wade podcast. It opens with a dramatic retelling of heroics during a fire that destroyed Tempsford Hall in 1898. I play the part of the Major, the wonderful Owen Stanton of Time Between Times podcast plays Bulkeley Hughes and Tess Savigear plays Millicent the nurse. Great fun as ever! Hope you enjoy it. ❤️👻😀

This old store in Shefford has always fascinated me. Who was W. Caton? When did they open? I love the faded sign above the window for. Has anyone got any old pictures of it back in the day? I’ve digitally enhanced (not quite right though) the old sign to make it more readable.

Bottle Digging and Collecting anyone have any flagons or bottles from W. Caton of Shefford?

It’s next to my favourite Shefford forgotten gem The Porch, that still needs saving!

The 1982 classic movie Poltergeist hits the big screen at 7.15pm tomorrow (Mon 1 June) at Cineworld in Milton Keynes or Stevenage. If you’ve never seen the movie or just want the chance to see it as it’s meant to be enjoyed then get yourself tickets! It’s brilliant ❤️👻😀
