Annan Academy News

Annan Academy News Annan Academy is a 6 year comprehensive Secondary school based in the south west of Scotland. It has a role of approximately 950 pupils.

Annan has nine cluster primary schools which are; Carrutherstown, Cummertrees, Eastriggs, Elmvale, Gretna; Hecklegirth; Newington, Springfield and St Columbus. Visitors to the Academy will notice that while most of the school buildings are modern, there is a part which dates back further. The old building incorporating the bell-tower dates back over a century to 1895. This is a constant reminder o

f the school's history and its origins. Recent refurbishment has created an enhanced learning environment for staff and pupils. A leading example of this is the new Performing Arts building situated towards the rear of the school. At Annan Academy we have a hardworking, dedicated and passionate staff who deliver the curriculum in an innovative and engaging manner. In order for this to be achieved pupils at Annan Academy are expected to give their best in all facets of their education. The school has a uniform policy which all pupils must adhere to; shirt, tie, black trousers/skirt/dress, black footwear. As a school we offer a vibrant extra-curricular programme to all pupils providing them with the necessary skills to be successful in their chosen career path. Highlights of this include a number of educationally relevant excursions, the opportunity to be involved in a variety of sporting teams and the production of junior and senior shows. Annan Academy is also working towards the LGBT Schools Charter. We committed to this programme in Autumn 2018. The programme has been developed to support schools to undertake training and review policies, practice and resources to make sure that Annan Academy meeting legislative needs and is as inclusive as we can be. We look forward to involving community partners, parents and pupils, both past and present in the achievements and successes of our young people.

Our running club took a trip to the pipeline today and it was ....a breeze! With the rain and wind of the day making conditions tricky for track running, they decided to go on a run. It was nice and steady out and a wee bit faster coming back in. What a great bunch. Well done everyone!

A huge thank you to everyone who used their blue token to support the Home Economics Department at Annan Academy! This money will make a difference for years to come in being able to purchase much needed equipment to allow our pupils to continue to cook beautiful food and nurture a love for this life long skill. Thank you 6052 in the Community for your continued support. From all of us in the Home Economics Department, and especially the kids who cook with us!

Congratulations to Annan Academy’s Home Economics Department on receiving Β£1500 from our last Stronger Starts voting round!

Had a lovely chat with the teachers about how important this money will be for the students and got a nose round some of my old classrooms πŸ₯°

This money will ensure kids in this high demand subject can have new equipment - home economics prepares them for careers and teaches really important life skills πŸ§‘β€πŸ³

Our school athletics finals took place on Friday and it did not disappoint, with some of the quickest times across track events that we have seen in many years!

Sporting Success πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ†

Last week our junior netball teams competed in the D&G regional seasoner closer in Dumfries. 12 teams across Dumfries and Galloway competed throughout the day to be split in to the "Shield" and "Plate" tournaments in the afternoon. Both our A and B team secured a place in the top shield tournament and battled it out in matches against other squads.

The B team won 1, drew 2 and lost 2 so secured 4th place overall which is a massive achievement. Nahla Matthew secured player of the day for Annan B and 3 girls from the team were invited to regional trials! A great result for a great bunch of girls.

The A team were missing a few vital players with the Netherlands trip, so played all games with no subs and still managed to hold onto their title of regional champions! The squad won all of their games on the day and secured first place overall bringing the shield back to Annan Academy again for the second year running. Sian Vickers was recognised as player of the day for Annan A and all girls in this squad were invited to trial for the regional squad.

A very successful day of netball with a very talented bunch of girls that rounds off another superb season for them. πŸ–€πŸ’›

BE CAREFUL IN WATER THIS WEEKEND!
Some beautiful photos of the River Annan taking by Bob and shared by Annan online but remember to please be careful around open water this weekend.. it’s shallow so diving is going to be dangerous, it’s still cold and can send your body quickly into shock and it is slippery underfoot making falls more likely. My son & his friends were strong swimmers and despite the warnings still went to the river on a hot day .. by the end of that day one was in hospital and was extremely lucky, the rest were in shock and coastguards, fire & police had all been scrambled. A day no one involved will forget 😒.. please don’t let this be you!! BE SAFE we want you back on Monday!
