** PRIDE OF ANNAN HEADS TO STRANRAER TO TAKE PART IN HISTORY-MAKING SKIFFIEWORLDS **
Annan Harbour Rowing Clubs Pride of Annan is heading to Stranraer this weekend to take part in the SkiffieWorlds 2025 which are set to make history as the largest gathering of the St Ayles class of coastal rowing boats ever assembled.
Annan is one of a record-breaking 79 clubs competing in the World Championships, which run from July 6-12, with more than 2,000 rowers from four continents, and teams from as far afield as Australia, South Africa, USA and Canada, as well as the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands, taking part.
Annan Harbour Rowing club has been preparing for months for the championships, which are held every three years. The last was in Kortgene in the Netherlands in 2022, which five rowers from Annan attended, competing in four races.
For this SkiffieWorlds, almost all of its rowers are going, with 14 people aged from 29 – 75, taking part in 12 races.
Local businesses and community groups have helped the rowers get their boat ready for Stranraer. Sponsors Carrs Billington Annan provided paint and varnish for the refurbishment of the community-built racing skiff, while Annandale Distillery has sponsored the club’s new yellow crew T-shirts.
“It’s been quite a busy few weeks getting things ready,” says Fiona Stoddart, Annan Harbour rower, and the club’s SkiffieWorlds co-ordinator.
“Thanks to the support we have had from local companies we now have a smart, newly painted boat to take to Stranraer and also new shirts for all the rowers taking part in the different races ”
All the club members, plus some members of the Annan Harbour Action Group - Charity Sc46732Men’s Shed, have been involved with getting the skiff ready for the races, from sanding, painting, varnishing the skiff, to oiling and taping oars, and sourcing new items of equipment
* SkiffieWorlds 2025 is hosted by Stranraer Water Sports Association on behalf of St Ayles Skiff International. The event is sponsored by EcoGen and funded by EventScotland, Dumfries and Galloway Council, South of Scotland Enterprise, Kilgallioch Community Fund and the Galloway Association of Glasgow.
