On our way to Greenland we passed through Reykjavik. We’d never been to Iceland before although had looked at hiking in the north of the island.
I love a cathedral - it always says so much about the congregation and history. In this instance the Reykjavik Cathedral is an impressive structure made with what looked and felt like blown cement onto many cylindrical pipes.
Inside I loved the lack of bling - a couple of artworks did not detract from the simplicity and purity. It felt very warm and maybe like being in an igloo with that kind of light.
We avoided pickled shark (Hakarl) the national delicacy and went with BakaBaka Pizza which was delicious. The building is like a fairytale cottage in the heart of the city. Good food options can also be had at the old fish market by the port.
Be prepared for slightly higher prices than you may be use to if British.
We loved the fly over Iceland experience found in amongst some hangars by the harbour. Multiple “flights” daily but book ahead. A Birds Eye view of Iceland 🇮🇸 and a great way to start our trip.

Here’s a way to get a dose of Deep South America without actually having to visit this year.
The Clearing by Tim Gautreaux is an excellent well written story set in the Louisiana swamps in the 1920s.
Prohibition in America began in 1920 and I could kind of see why - alcohol was the undoing of many after 6 days hard labour. People (men) would gamble and drink their money away. Families were raised in extremities but still communities were made by women.
Highly recommend this book.

Slovenia 🇸🇮 Sept 2024
As the rains poured down across Europe wrecking havoc and claiming lives, we were exploring Slovenia and had only 1 day of rain. Although we did have about 1 foot of snow in the mountains.
Slovenia is hiking / kayaking / fishing country. Predominantly mountains with the River Soca carrying glacial melt down into the valleys and very alpine like villages.
Mainly known for Lake Bled which Ofc is lovely, there’s lots more besides. From the Julien Alpine range in the north to seaside fishing villages in the south. An easy country to explore by car - the main disappointment being the dormitory villages full of people like us.
Visit for nature and the beautiful churches…and the River Soca.
