Just over 50 years ago I took what I thought to be a temporary position with Continental Trailways, a Texas, USA based bus company who pioneered "Visit USA" Travel as far back as 1954 when they opened an office in Amsterdam! For the first time in 1971, I travelled to the USA and took the bus, to live the Trailways experience, the Golden Eagle service from New York City to Dallas. And here I am, still selling the USA and Canada as holiday destinations.
Seeing Dallas, I realised how Texas likes to do things in a much bigger way, I was there during the Pan American Livestock exposition and was invited to the Circle T ranch for a small BBQ, some 5000 people. I even got to go horse back riding with the owner's 23 year old daughter....hummm. Over the years I have got to know Texas in depth, making many friends, one of whom sadly, a lovely guy called Don Digby has since passed away. Don represented the city of Grapevine that lies between Ft Worth, Dallas, and the airport. In 1971 the FT Worth airport was not yet open, Love Field being the main landing spot. I have a story to tell about DFW when it opened but that's for another time, or perhaps it will make it to my book.
Today there is a service between DFW and Grapevine, Texrail offers a service to downtown Grapevine and on to Ft Worth. It costs just $2.50 at the time of going to press. So what's there to do in Grapevine, well there's shopping, dining, wineries, museums, nightlife, theatres and shows, sports, spas and outdoor adventures, great for all families.
The Grapevine Vintage Railroad - located in the heart of Historic Downtown Grapevine - offers a unique experience on authentic 1920s Victorian coaches. There's the Texas Star Dinner Theatre, and In the heart of Historic Downtown Grapevine, you'll find the beautifully restored art deco-style Palace Arts Center, home to the Palace Theatre and the Lancaster Theatre. Or step into the pioneer past to
learn about Grapevine and the city's heritage by visiting Nash Farm. Purchased by Thomas Jefferson Nash in 1859, this historic landmark brings history to life through exhibits, interpretive programs and touchable displays.
Texas is the fifth largest wine producing state in the U.S., and Grapevine has served as a trendsetter and leader with award-winning wineries and winemakers. Whilst visiting, you can tour one of the city's many wineries, even enjoy a festival dedicated to Texas wine or sample a local award-winning wine. For those interested in exploring Grapevine's award-winning winery tasting rooms and restaurants via the comfort of air conditioning, book a bus tour with Grapevine Wine Tours. Each classic lunch or dinner tour offers stops at two wineries and a three-course meal at a great restaurant. Or book a group tour (10 or more), and have the bus to yourselves, as well as an itinerary that's uniquely suited to you.
On the Grapevine Food Tour, join a local lover of food and wine for a three-hour walking tour on beautiful and historic Main Street. Experience the "tastes of Texas" with samplings of Texas wines, Texas dishes and other tasty treats! Grapevine is the Christmas Capital of Texas too, well worth a visit during the festive season.
Need to get outdoors, there is Lake Grapevine with a sprawling 8,000 acres, it is a center for boating, water-skiing, wind surfing, fishing and camping. With a beautiful rolling shoreline and more than nine miles of wilderness trails, Lake Grapevine is one of the finest hiking and biking destinations in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
As for accommodation, there is plenty to suit all pockets. We will gladly introduce you to some of them.
