Villa Horizonte Azul makes the most of that setting. Floor-to-ceiling glass, generous interiors and a seamless flow between the house and terrace keep the sea in view throughout, while the 40-metre pool runs almost the full length of the property.

Not all of Menorca is turquoise coves and beach clubs.

Head east to Es Grau and the landscape changes. Saltwater lagoons, walking trails, pine forests and some of the island's most protected coastline.

La Casita looks out across Albufera des Grau Natural Park, with views that stretch from rolling green hills to the sea beyond. The kind of panorama that changes throughout the day, whether you're having a slow breakfast on the terrace or cooling off in the pool after a walk along the coast.

Mahon is also close enough when you're in the mood for restaurants and a bit more energy, but you'll want to rent a car.

One of the joys of Menorca is that it doesn't ask much of you. Find a good beach, a decent lunch spot and a villa with a pool, and you're already most of the way there.

That said, a private boat charter to the island's hidden calas, a vineyard lunch at Binifadet or a chef cooking dinner back at the villa can make a good holiday even better.

If you're the sort of person who chooses a holiday destination based on where you'll swim, Cala en Brut has probably already crossed your radar.

A stretch of white rock and impossibly clear water just outside Ciutadella, it's where locals come to swim, sunbathe and spend entire afternoons jumping straight into the sea.

Villa Ramacor sits right above it, with uninterrupted views across the cove and private access to the bathing platforms below. The pool is excellent, but chances are you'll find yourself drawn to the Mediterranean instead.

When you've had your fill of swimming, Ciutadella's maze of stone streets, small boutiques and harbour-front restaurants are just down the coast.
