Another iris looking fantastic at a clients garden last week, Iris ‘Benton Dierdre’, recently planted from Stanton Hall Gardens.

Bred by Sir Cedric Morris in the late 1930s/early 1940s in Benton End in Suffolk , this tall bearded iris was helped to return back into cultivation by Sarah Cook after leaving her Head Gardener role at Sissinghurst and immersing herself in his work of breeding and introducing around 90 Iris, often with the named Benton as part of their cultivar name.

It’s a beauty, even in the rain!

The Siberian iris, Iris sibirica, looking superb after last nights rain in one clients garden.

I’m a huge fan of iris after caring for the Plant Heritage National Collection of Iris series Spuriae during my time at Belsay Hall, keeping detailed records and reports, attending meetings and most importantly top plant husbandry to ensure they thrived!

If you have irises (or other plants!) which need a helping hand to thrive, let me know for detailed help and advice!

Absolutely amazing to have these incredible animals back on the Northumberland coastline…not horticulture but couldn’t resist sharing this!

*Always thoroughly checked for nests and bat roosts prior to commencing any work, I postponed work at Newton by the Sea on an unruly rose last week due to a nest with eggs on the last pic!*

Lovely visit to Blagdon Hall last weekend for the National Garden Scheme North East-Durham Northumberland Teesside Tyne Wear open day.

Great to see the fantastic old beech trees again, Plant Heritage National Collections and specimens of other trees and shrubs including the superb tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera).

So pleased to see the walled garden glasshouses in great condition and surrounding borders in fine fettle.

Even gave a little history lesson in walled garden productive glasshouses to some fellow visitors after they asked what was growing in them, mistaking me for the gardener!

**And remember, let me know if you’d like me to undertake work and care for your garden as I’ve still some availability this year!**

Maybe a new hybrid pepper?! 🤞

Self seeded peppers potted up this evening after a busy day at work in a Northumberland wedding venue, caravan park and village pub. Then a first visit to another new client and fantastic garden west of Morpeth.

Some bonus pics from the wedding venue last week!

Always nice to see this great book, on display at Barter Books Alnwick.

Written by Susie White and featuring some of the best gardens in Northumberland and the Borders, I can’t believe it was published 20 years ago whilst I was Head Gardener at Belsay Hall and Gardens!
