One of our favourite waterfalls ☺️

Aysgarth Middle Falls - one of those places where Wensleydale reminds you it has a louder side.

The falls are part of the famous Aysgarth trio on the River Ure, where the water drops over broad limestone ledges rather than one neat plunge. Middle Falls sits between the better-known Upper and Lower sections, but it has plenty of character of its own - especially when the river is pushing through and making a proper job of it.

Did you know? Aysgarth Falls became widely familiar to film fans after appearing in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves - though the real thing has been pulling people into Wensleydale for far longer than Kevin Costner’s accent ever managed.

Northern Perspectives capturing real places across the North - the landmarks, landscapes and slightly damp reminders that water usually wins.

Stunning view of Askrigg Church tower

St Oswald’s Church at Askrigg has had a bit of a glow-up - and not the subtle kind.

The tower has recently undergone major conservation work, with a traditional lime render applied to help protect it from damp and decay. It has divided opinion locally, which is fair enough when a familiar old Dales landmark suddenly looks like it has discovered moisturiser, but the work was based on evidence that the tower would once have had a lighter finish before Victorian changes altered its appearance.

Did you know? The tower project went on to win the King of Prussia Gold Medal for high-quality church conservation and repair - so while it may have started arguments, it has also earned proper national recognition.

Northern Perspectives capturing the real places of the North - including the ones brave enough to upset half a village by changing colour.

Well I didn't know this. What a wonderful thing. We already have a blackbird building a nest in our garden

Bird Day: why Spring really is on its way. Yesterday I learnt something interesting, thanks to Ryedale Folk Museum. 12th March was traditionally known as Bird Day: the time when people started to look to bird for signs of Spring, watching for the return of some migrating birds, listening for birdsong and seeing the first signs of nest-building.

Many of us have now heard and seen the key heralds of Spring - curlews and oystercatchers, and spotted dippers. The Merlin birdsong identification app (free and brilliant if you haven't yet come across it) is starting to come into its own again.

Catkins are becoming more open, p***y willows furrier and hawthorn is greening up. Yellow is the dominant colour: daffodils, lingering celandines, primroses and even some early dandelions. There are still bursts of sleet, snow and storm winds, but they're now interspersed with sunny intervals and gorgeous rainbows. Bright March morning light feels such a bonus.

I'll be marking Bird Day on my calendar in future. It's so uplifting to notice all these signs of Spring. Ryedale Folk Museum is full of wisdom and interesting folklore. I didn't know that when you hear a cuckoo's call marking the arrival of Spring, you need to turn over coins in your pocket to guarantee prosperity. Now I just need to find some coins... remember them?!

A Holiday to remember
Imagine waking up to views of green fields and rolling hills in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Escaping the stresses and strains of everyday life. Hearing the joyful calls of curlew, lapwing and oyster catchers. Enjoying a locally brewed pint and a hearty lunch in one of our three Askrigg village pubs (The Crown Inn , Middle House Askrigg and Kings Arms Askrigg) before heading back to one of our two pet free, five star, gold award holiday cottages, being greeted on the way by the locals (it’s what we do round here). Chilling in the cottage gardens with delicious coffee and cake from our village deli The Bake-Well, Market Place with everything home made. Travelling on the community run Little White Bus bus to nearby Bolton Castle, still owned by the family who built it in 1378, and walking back to Askrigg through the wild flower meadows by the River Ure.

Well, you can do all of this and more from our two fabulous holiday cottages sleeping 4 and 2 in Askrigg in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. You can find full details on our website at www.askrigg.com, email us at [email protected] or call us, Ken and Sue, on 01969 650022

If you love Muker Show you may wish to help them to buy the main show field. Details below 👇

Muker Show Committee have been offered an opportunity to purchase the main show field where the show has been held since 1893. This is a wonderful opportunity for the Show to own the main show field, ensuring it will continue to be the 'home' of Muker Show for many years and future generations to come.

The Show Committee have raised nearly £30,000 to date, and we are now opening up the fundraising to the public, so everyone has the opportunity to contribute towards the field purchase as we know just how special the show is to so many. This will allow people to feel they have helped secure both Muker Show and the field's future.

You can donate via our official Gofundme page: https://gofund.me/53c166430 which can be accessed via our page and www.mukershow.co.uk.

Cheques can be made out to Muker Show Ltd and posted to: Helen Guy, East View Cottage, Keld, North Yorkshire,

All donations will be very much appreciated
Thank you in advance for your support

Who knew that you could get a pork pie map? Brilliant 💡😍

I think it's fair to assume that whatever the weather, a lot of folks following us appreciate a decent pork pie 😉. Did you know there's a map of where to find a good one, from the Pork Pie Appreciation Society!

Of course we have the greenest grass😁

Did you know the grass really is greener in the Yorkshire Dales? Environmentalists have actually proven that we really do have some of the greenest grass.

It's thanks to a unique combination of soil, limestone, the light, wind, rain, sheep droppings (some people will pay a fortune for 'organic fertiliser' - we don't have to) and other Yorkshire Dales magic. Large swathes of land remain relatively undisturbed so they're rarely crushed and trampled underfoot. None of the grass is mown too low - usually, it's the sheep doing the mowing.

Dales grass stays green almost all year too - the sun is rarely hot enough to burn it and the snow doesn't lay around long enough to kill it.

Its a particularly lush green in lowland areas at the moment, particularly when then gentle winter sun has been shining on it for a couple of hours - an uplifting sight, promising Spring isnt too far away.

Greenest fields you’ve seen? Photos?

Sun, blue skies, snow and frost. What a perfect day to get out and about in and around Askrigg in the Yorkshire Dales National Park .

The signs of Spring with snowdrops and crocus certainly lift your heart as does a chat to a curious hen. Reward yourself with soup and a scone followed by a Valentine's Day treat at the Bake-well in Askrigg and add to your waterfall collection at Aysgarth Falls.
