The Calanais Standing Stones are one of the most significant and mysterious Neolithic monuments in Scotland.

Your journey begins in late afternoon on the Aberdeen docks. You board the ferry, feeling the salt air on your face as the harbour lights fade, before the rhythm of the North Sea rocks you to sleep.

By the time morning breaks, you’re stepping out onto the dock as the ferry approaches Lerwick, and the cries of seabirds are carried on the breeze.

Shetland, a remote archipelago off the north coast of mainland Scotland, is steeped in Norse history. And it is perhaps best experienced when you arrive by ferry.
