Volunteers’ Week 2026 - Thank You to Our Incredible Volunteers

This week is Volunteers' Week, a chance to celebrate the amazing people who give their time, skills and enthusiasm to causes across the UK.

At the Strathspey Railway, volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. From operating and maintaining the locomotives, greeting passengers at stations and checking tickets on our trains, to maintaining carriages, track, signalling and much more, hundreds of volunteer hours help keep this historic railway running. Many of the experiences our visitors enjoy simply wouldn't be possible without them.

Whether they volunteer once a week, once a month, or during special events, every contribution makes a difference. Our volunteers come from all walks of life, united by a shared passion for railways, heritage and preserving something special for future generations.

To every volunteer who gives their time to the Strathspey Railway, thank you. Your dedication, knowledge, hard work and enthusiasm help keep steam alive in the Highlands. 🚂❤️

Interested in joining our volunteer family? Training and support are provided, and opportunities exist across many different departments, both customer-facing and behind the scenes. Find out more here: https://strathspeyrailway.co.uk/volunteering.html

🚂 Part of the Strathspey story from the beginning 🚂

5025 was bought directly from British Railways in the summer of 1968 by the late WEC (Ted) Watkinson. Unlike many of her preserved sisters she never sat in a scrapyard. Ted bought the loco specifically for use on the projected Strathspey Railway.

More than 50 years later, visitors can enjoy seeing 5025 in action on the railway she was acquired to help create, a lasting testament to Ted Watkinson's foresight and commitment to railway preservation.

🚂 A pioneer of the famous Black Five class 🚂

5025: 842 Black Fives were built between 1934 and 1952. Although the lowest number in the class - LMS 5000, has been preserved, our loco LMS 5025 is the oldest member in the class. She was delivered into service in August 1934 while it took until February 1935 for 5000 to enter traffic.

LMS 5025 can be seen hauling trains through the stunning scenery of the Cairngorms, allowing passengers to experience a living piece of railway history.

Last week we enjoyed some glorious Highland sunshine and our trains were busier than ever! ☀️🚂

This coming week the forecast looks a little more mixed, with cooler temperatures and the chance of some rain, but that's all part of the charm of a day out on the Strathspey Railway.

Whether you're enjoying the sunshine from our heritage carriages, watching the rain drift across the moorland, or simply relaxing with a hot drink as the steam* locomotive works its way along our Highland heritage line, every journey offers something special.

Unlike many attractions, a trip on the Strathspey Railway can be enjoyed whatever the weather. So don't let the forecast put you off, climb aboard and experience the magic of steam in every season.

On 29 May 1982, a locomotive belonging to the Strathspey Railway Society pulled a special day-long return excursion from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh. On board was the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Scottish Philharmonic Singers which performed recitals on the train and at stations, as well as concerts at Duncraig Castle at lunchtime, and at the Lochalsh Hotel during tea

🚆 A wee reminder... This Saturday, we’ll be running additional Class 31 diesel-hauled services alongside our scheduled steam services.

We’ve received many requests asking to see more diesel traction on the railway, so this weekend is a chance to support and enjoy something a little different on the Strathspey Railway.

As a not for profit heritage railway, every service has significant running costs, from fuel and staffing to maintenance and infrastructure. Passenger numbers ultimately help determine what types of services we can continue to offer in the future.

If you’d like to see more heritage diesel services on our line, the best way to support them is by travelling on them. If you can't make it, perhaps you could share it with other enthusiasts.

Rover tickets will be available to purchase at the station on the day and are valid on both steam and diesel services.

📍 Class 31 Departures from Aviemore
🕙 11:20 | 13:50 | 16:05

We’d love to welcome you onboard for something a little different this weekend.
🌐 Standard travel tickets for these diesel services available here: https://strathspeyrailway.digitickets.co.uk/event-tickets/41164?catID=60185
