Greener Routes 🥾 Women's Stories

A FREE guided walking tour exploring the stories of women involved in the development of two beloved resort towns on the North Wales Coast.

The tour takes in two beloved resort towns on the North Wales Coast and explores the stories of several women involved in their development from small fishing villages to their Victorian heyday and beyond.

We will begin outside Prestatyn railway station before crossing over to the town centre. The walk will then follow the Offa’s D**e path up the scenic high street to the church before returning to the station for the train to Llandudno. Along the way you’ll hear stories of some feisty footballing women, a family of pioneers of women’s rights and other tales of women’s lives in this area, settled since Roman times.

After a scenic train journey, you’ll arrive in Llandudno, the Queen of Victorian resorts, in time for lunch at a local venue.

Then it’s time for a walk through the 19th century town centre and along the famous promenade. Your guide will share stories of women from across several thousand years of settlement in this beautiful bay, from pre-history through to the modern day. They’ll include artists, politicians, foreign Royals and a certain traveller in Wonderland. Finally, you’ll take the train back to Prestatyn, where the tour ends.

Greener Routes is a series of FREE guided walking 🥾 tours along the Conwy Valley and North Wales Coast.

The tours celebrate the stories, people and places that connect communities along the rail network. Each tour is guided by accredited Green Badge Tour Guides Tour Guide Katie & Peter Evans Tour Guide and Author, with participants travelling by train or bus between destinations and enjoying a locally sourced lunch along the way.

And the doors are open at the new Wrexham Museums

A fantastic new addition during the bid to become City of Culture 2029 Wrecsam2029 and bound to attract more visitors.

I'm definitely going to need multiple visits to take it all in but loved it! And great to see it busy with local people all sharing their own stories.

The Wrexham galleries tell of the industries, culture and events that shaped the city. Great to see many of the themes featured that I try to draw together in my tours ..... and lots more to research further.

I particularly loved this ever changing wall of faces. Some familiar, some new to me. All about the people and their stories. We Are Wrexham.

The other set of galleries focuses on the football history of Wales, including the strong ties to Wrexham as well as the trailblazing women footballers of North Wales.

I also loved how Penson's original building has been so beautifully updated ....... especially in the double height central foyer off which temporary exhibits are housed.

A visit is highly recommended - maybe combine it with a walking tour?

Visit today to St Deiniols Church, Worthenbury, often said to be the best example of a Georgian church in Wales.

It has a full set of original box pews marked with the family crests of their owners, including local landowners, the Pulestons.

In some places their stag crest includes the feathers of the Prince of Wales and an oak tree, granted to the family by the future George IV in 1806.

And their pew even boasts a fireplace!

The beautiful East window includes medieval fragments from the Puleston's home, Emral Hall.

There's a prominent 3 tier pulpit.

The window depicting 3 views of Christ bears a dedication to Annette Fountayne Puleston, first wife of Philip Yorke II of the nearby Erddig estate. She was a society beauty who caused scandal after their lavish wedding, fleeing her honeymoon by hitching a lift on a milk cart with her maid. The couple remained estranged until her death in 1899.

This lovely church is now in the care of Friends of Friendless Churches . It sits in a beautiful village close to the Welsh border in Wrexham county.

The church is open daily 10am to 4pm in September as part of Cadw Cymru Open Doors festival. Highly recommend a visit.

It's going to be a busy week in Wrexham next week.

With various events across the week marking the Gresford Disaster anniversary, the "Wrexham Works Wonders" event organised by Wrexham's Year of Wonder at Xplore Science Discovery Centre on Wednesday 23rd, and the opening of the refurbished Wrexham Museums to the public on Friday 25th (and much more besides) there is certainly a lot going on.

But before all that, another date for your diary is the next Wrexham City Guided Tour from a local Green Badge Tourist Guide, happening this Saturday 19th at 11 am. It's a great introduction to many of the key events in Wrexham's history being remembered next week.

With the start of the new football season well and truly underway, we begin a new run of dates for the Wrexham City Guided Tours hosted by myself and fellow Green Badge Guide, Peter Evans Tour Guide and Author.

I'll be leading the tour this coming Saturday, 22nd August, at 11 am starting from Wrexham Visitor Information Centre, where you can purchase tickets (also available on Eventbrite).

On the walk, we'll take a look at Wrexham both old and new, including a look back 150 years to 1876 Wrexham's Year of Wonder., as well as to the future and the recently launched bid for City of Culture Wrecsam2029.
