Tower Ridge (IV, 3), Ben Nevis.

Probably the longest day I've ever had in the hills, but one of the most enjoyable as well with during the latest CIC hut meet organised by .mountaineering.club . A ver early start at the CIC hut ended up in a very late return 21 hours later (including a benighted selfie on the summit). Conditions were not bad, with hard nevé all over the ridge, but constant snowfall made finding belays trickier and more time-consuming.

Nice combinations of techniques, from leading to moving together, buried axes, and night climbing made up for the best day out of the winter this season.

Techncially not too complicated, one needs to be quick and efficient the whole day, and has a very good mind to cross the Eastern traverse 😨. Luckily, the tower gap was easier than expected (especially needing to climb it in the dark).

Very well deserved rest the next day!

Not all in winter is hike and climb. Some weeks ago, and I took the bike🚲 instead to visit Duikish bothy 🏚.

Despite not bring a promising start, pleasing rain in Pitlochry 🌧, the weekend improved enough to enjoy the ride. It was mega cold, and cycle in the snow or getting wet feet on the bog, didn't help. However, a fire and warm food always solve all the prolems🔥

When you think you are scaping from the winter... but you are not allowed to climb El Teide because of winter conditions! 🙄🥶

A quick visit to in Tenerife made me meet El Teide for the first time! What a mountain🏔! What a volcano, actually🌋! It captivates you even before landing on the island. Each face offers you a different face and is like a lighthouse that you cannot miss from anywhere on the island.

Being so high and close to the sea, it is a great spot to see the rest of the Canary islands🇮🇨 and a perfect location for startgacing🌠.

It can me climbed from different sides, all of them now requiring special permits (link below), including the last section to the top shared by all the routes. In winter, specific equipment is required when icy conditions in the top (hence the lack of pictures from there... I didn't bring them with me!).

Definitely, a place to come back!

A long day in Creag Meagaidh! Conditions were magnificent after a cold week of easterly winds.

We headed to Staghorn Gully (III) and despite the early start, we were not the first nor the second team on the crag (we counted at least 8 teams ahead of us by the time we arrived to the base).

The gully makes for a fantastic, easy climb that brings you high quickly. Once in the big ledge before the pipes, given the traffic jam, we headed to the South Pipe (IV... that ended up being a big harder than expected).

The first pitch is steep and enjoyable, greatly led by ending in a higher cave! After a resf, the second pitch was way harder than anticipated, although it allowed to take great pictures!

After a bit of struggle, joined us in the cave, and using a "caterpillar" seconding style, we all managed to get out of the route... some hours after we scheduled 😅.

Nothing better to recover from a long day on the hills than a great supper with the .mountaineering.club back at the hut!

This year's winter climbing season started for me at the CIC hut at the beginning of Januray. SMC invited .mountaineering.club for a joining meet at this perfectly located hut.

Despite the weather and conditions weren't perfect, and I managed to find a suitable route away of the avalanche risk: South West Ridge (IV,5) on Douglas' Boulder.

A very early start brought us to the base of the route with .mcnaught and Lee, who got the same idea as us. The first move was especially hard (probably harder than the tech.5 the route was meant to be), but after a great lead both by Pete and Dean, the rest of the ridge was very enjoyable.

Finishing on a top, even if small, is always rewarding, and abseiling to descent adds a bit of extra adventure to the day.

The day deteriorated very quickly afterwards, so we decided to come back to the carpark that evening... and leaving from it proved to be an even harder given the complete icy conditions on the track!

P.S. we manage to witness (from afar) the astonishing achievement of on his aperture of the new X,10 route on the Ben! (Last pic).

Some weeks ago, I started thw winter session with great company

We went to Ben Macdui via the Goat Track in Coire an t-Sneachda. Despite some struggle with the boulder fields and the stepness, we reach the summit at the right moment when all clouds cleared. Blue skies contrasting the white landspace and a fantastic sunset for finishing the day!

A pitty missing the beginning of the JMCS AGM (not the best start as president 😅)

📸 Thanks for the great pictures!
