The ongoing fire in the northern Cairngorms has flared-up more severely and is being driven on strong winds. The fire is once again threatening the northern boundary of Mar Lodge Estate, and therefore as a precaution, we are again closing the car parks at the Linn of Dee and Linn of Quoich.

The fire is still a significant distance away, and there is no immediate risk to buildings or property on Mar Lodge Estate.

However, given that this is a serious fire, and that many people choose to walk through the Cairngorms from these car parks, particularly at weekends, we have taken this decision as a precaution, to protect the public, and to help facilitate any emergency response, should it be required.

🚨 Wildfire update – Major incident declared

Police Scotland has declared a major incident as emergency services continue to respond to the ongoing wildfire within the Cairngorms National Park.

As a precaution, all residents of Nethy Bridge are being evacuated to allow emergency services to continue their operational response safely and effectively. Residents are being directed to a dedicated respite centre at the Macdonald Aviemore Resort and access roads into Nethy Bridge have been closed.

More than 500 firefighters have been mobilised since the incident began on Wednesday, 15 July. They continue to work alongside Forestry and Land Scotland, Cairngorms National Park, landowners, estate gamekeepers and emergency service partners to tackle this challenging and complex wildfire.

Helicopter water-bombing operations remain essential due to the remote and difficult terrain, helping crews reach hotspots that cannot be safely accessed from the ground.

⚠️ Please continue to stay away from the affected areas while firefighting operations remain ongoing. The area remains unsafe due to rapidly changing fire behaviour, active firefighting operations and helicopter activity.

Residents should continue to follow advice issued by Police Scotland and emergency services.

Six fire appliances, a specialist wildfire unit and an additional 4x4 vehicle remain at the scene today, Thursday, 16 July, as crews continue to respond to the incident.

Emergency services continue to respond to a six square kilometre wildfire near Glenmore in the Cairngorms National Park, and we are urging the public to stay away from the area.

A strict cordon remains in place, and road closures continue to support the emergency response. People must not travel to the area or attempt to access Glenmore Forest Park, Loch Morlich or the surrounding area while firefighting operations are ongoing.

Firefighters worked overnight to protect nearby homes, businesses and the surrounding area. This includes creating firebreaks alongside landowners and partner agencies to contain spread and protect infrastructure. RSPB rangers are also supporting the response, including using a drone to monitor the incident.

A number of properties and visitor centres remain evacuated as a safety precaution due to their proximity to the wildfire. Any additional evacuation measures will continue to be assessed as the incident progresses and in line with changing conditions. If asked to evacuate, members of the public and local residents should do so immediately.

Evacuation decisions are taken only where there is genuine risk to public safety.

Deputy Assistant Chief Officer Ian McMeekin said: "This remains a protracted incident, and I want to thank our firefighters for their continued commitment and determination in challenging conditions. I would also like to thank our partner agencies, landowners and local organisations whose support has been invaluable throughout this response.

"The safety of our communities remains our priority, and we will continue to assess the need for any further evacuations alongside multi-agency partners as the incident progresses.

"The wildfire risk across Scotland remains high. We are asking everyone to follow the advice in place, stay away from the affected area and help reduce the risk of further wildfires while our crews continue their work to bring this incident to a safe conclusion."

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have shared that emergency services continue to tackle a large-scale wildfire covering more than two kilometres in width near to Glenmore.

A number of homes and businesses including campsites and ski resorts within the Glenmore Forest Park area have been closed and evacuated as a safety precaution due to the close proximity to the incident.

As of 9pm on Wednesday night (15 July), Scottish Fire and Rescue Service currently has six fire appliances, a wildfire unit, specialist resources and tactical commanders mobilised to the scene after the alarm was raised just before 12pm earlier today.

Firefighters are working with landowners to contain the incident and create fire breaks, with high winds causing the fire to spread across areas of trees and woodland. There are no reported casualties.

Road closures continue to be in place to support the emergency response, and people are asked to avoid the area within Glenmore Forest Park and Loch Morlich on Thursday, 16 July as this incident continues.

We will share updates as the situation continues. In the meantime, our thanks go out to the emergency services, gamekeepers, NGO and estate staff and many others from across the community who are working non-stop to get these fires under control, and providing support to those affected.

Emergency services and partners are continuing to respond to this wildfire.

A number of properties and premises in the area have been evacuated as a precaution.

The Ski Road is currently closed.

Anyone walking in the Cairngorms should avoid the area and let family or friends know when they have returned.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and partners are currently in attendance at a large fire in the open near to Ryvoan Bothy within the Cairngorms National Park.

Due to large volumes of smoke travelling towards populated areas nearby, residents in Aviemore, Glenmore and the surrounding communities should keep their windows and doors closed. If you are within this area and can see or smell smoke, please follow the same advice. If you are aware of someone hiking in the area, please ask them to get themselves safely off any surrounding hills as soon as possible.

The Fire Service has asked that people avoid the Glenmore and Aviemore area, and remain vigilant. We will post further updates when we have them.
