A closer look from above at this ancient site, there is very little left of the stone castle of Dunseverick (Dún Sobairce) and what is visible dates to the late 1500s.

The history of the site though goes back into the mist of time and beyond recorded history. The photo from this angle gives a good sense of the scale of the original settlement.

The ancient citadel according to many scholars was founded over three thousand years ago (circa 1150 BC) by Sobairce who along with his brother Cermna Finn became joint High Kings of Ireland. They divided the island into two parts on a line running from Drogheda to Limerick.

Cermna Finn ruled the southern part from Dún Cermna (Fort of Cermna) near Kinsale and Sobairce the northern part from Dún Sobairce (Fort of Sobairce). Their joint rule lasted for forty years.

Another gorgeous view taken of our local area.🥰

Check out www.causewaycoastalroute.com for more stunning photos and information on our local area.

A view of Lough Dhu (Doo) in the foreground and Lough na Cranagh (Coolanlough) both in the townland of Cross on the top of Fair Head (Benmore). The crannog which you can see in the centre of Lough na Cranagh is recorded as being built during the mid 1500s by one of the MacDonnell clan. The name Coolanlough is marked on the OS map a couple of fields away and may indicate that at one time the lough had a greater surface area.

Lough Dhu (Doo) according to an old folklore story, is the home of a creature described as being half man and half beast. You can check out the story on my main website under Ballycastle/ Fair Head. Not a place for the faint hearted after dark but idyllic on a sunny day.

There are walks here to enjoy between Fair Head and Murlough Bay which have the most stunning views on a clear day. Definitely suited for the walker as the roads around here are single lane and not built to cater for traffic. They are also working farm roads.
