John and I were out today on the Aonach Eagach with a Falkirk Outdoors scrambling team of Alex, Craig and Justina.

Conditions were excellent with dry rock, a breeze, cloud for the walk up and sun coming through as the day went on. It was a delight to introduce the Aonach Eagach to the team on a day like today.

The last two days I've been delivering a Lowland Leader Training Course for Falkirk Outdoors from their Bothkennar Hub.

On Saturday we did a local walk from the Hub. Today we visited the Muiravonside Country Parkn and Union Canal. The shade from the trees in the park was very welcome in the heat today.

A friendly group with a good range of backgrounds and reasons for doing the training made for a very pleasant two days with lots of input and engagement.

Craig, John, Marc, Paul and I used a Falkirk Outdoors staff training day to check out Black Crag near Dunsinane Hill today as a potential climbing venue. None of us had climbed here before and we're always keen to find venues not too far from our base.

There's a fair bit of gorse and loose rock to deal with and the lichen on a lot of the routes would be slippy if wet. However, the more travelled routes are pretty clean and there are some good lines. The pick of those we climbed were Tree Route and Mental Crack.

The crag is in a very pleasant setting in the Sidlaw Hills with views to the Angus Glens.

It's probably not worth travelling far to, but is worth a visit if in the area and approached with an open mind.

No sign of Birnham Wood near Dunsinane today!
