The Sill is the UK’s National Landscape Discovery Centre at Once Brewed in the Northumberland National Park. The building is the result of an innovative partnership between Northumberland National Park and YHA England and Wales. The Sill is a showcase of local pride and passion. It features exhibitions, learning and event spaces, a local food café, a world-class Youth Hostel, rural business hub, and a shop specialising in local crafts and produce.

Come along to our first Forest School session this Friday at Walltown Country Park for home educated children.

These hands on sessions will see children explore the site and learn new skills involving:

– Shelter and den building
– Sensory activities
– Tree and plant identification
– Exploring wildlife and habitats
– Nature themed crafts

Dates:
Fridays 4, 11, 18, 25 September
Fridays 2, 9 October

Time:
10:00am to 12:00pm

Suitable for ages 8 – 13

£4 per child per session

There’s room on the first session this Friday for anyone who’d like to come along.

This fun interactive session lets you explore the pond at Walltown, and friendly National Park ranger will help you identify in the insects and creatures you'll find. It's perfect if you're looking for an outdoors, natural activity to keep the kids entertained. All equipment provided.

Healthy Park, Healthy People connects people who are too often excluded from the benefits of National Parks and shows how Northumberland National Park can become genuinely inclusive spaces for wellbeing, connection and participation.

If you’re looking for a location to view the solar eclipse later today, Walltown is the perfect place!
With potential for a clear, unobstructed view, weather permitting, if you stand on the higher ground just below the crags. The eclipse will peak around 7pm this evening.

Please remember to bring your certified eclipse glasses or other means to safely view the eclipse. Never look directly at the sun as it can permanently damage your eyes.

Then if you fancy catching the Perseid meteor shower, peaking tonight, then Walltown again is the ideal spot. Being a certified Dark Sky Discovery Site, it enjoys pristine dark skies, and as is part of Northumberland International Dark Sky Park, the largest gold status dark sky park in Europe.

Don't go in the water... for your own personal safety but also as you might upset the delicately balanced ecosystem of our pond!

Ranger Ben found this beautiful specimen during the last Wild Wednesday pond dipping session at Wallltown.

She's a female great diving beetle. Female's can be identified by having ribs down their wing case, and although they are not rare, they like to inhabit bodies of water abundant with vegetation.

If you fancy spotting some creatures of your own, the next pond dipping session at Walltown is this Wednesday (tomorrow) 12 August.
