Remember his ultimate sacrifice. I cannot imagine the pain and loss felt by his wife Mary and their four children. 1917 and the 3rd battle of Ypres saw his death, killed near the Menin Road on September 26th. 27 years later and Bert’s nephew’s ( my Dad ) was standing guard on the Menin Road gate in Ypres. War is a recurring event when leaders and countries no longer respect each other. I hope 11am on 11/11 is a reminder of the sacrifices made by so many. I pray all conflicts end soon. Fighting is not the way to solve problems.

A brave son, a loving husband, a forever missed father. Remembering Herbert Orlando Dudderidge, youngest of 7 siblings, younger brother to my grandfather. Aged 30 when he was killed in the battle of the 3rd Ypres on the Menin Road. Buried next to the rest of his Machine Gun Crew in Google Crater Cemetery. They took a direct hit from a German Shell at 5:30am on the morning of September 26th, 1917, in the vicinity of Shrewsbury Wood. A butcher in civilian life, he left behind four children and his wife Mary in Malpas Road Newport Gwent.
