Today the EU has fully introduced the Entry / Exit System (EES) — a digital border control system that replaces passport stamping. 

It applies to non-EU travellers, including UK citizens. 

Key new rules:-
• Your passport will no longer be stamped. Instead, your entry/exit is recorded electronically 
• Biometric checks (first visit)

On your first trip after the system applies to you, you must:
• Scan your passport
• Give fingerprints
• Have a facial photo taken 

This creates your digital travel record:
Data stored for future trips
•Your details are stored for around 3 years 
• Next time you travel, checks should be faster (no full re-registration)

Tracks your stay automatically:
• The system monitors the 90 days in any 180 days rule
• Helps detect overstays automatically 

Where it applies:
EES is used across Schengen countries, including:
• France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Greece, etc. 
What it means for travellers:
Expect longer queues (for now)
• Border checks may take longer initially 
• Reports already warn of major delays at airports and ports

‼️Travel Update for UK passport holders‼️

From 12 October 2025, the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) will officially launch.
This new digital border system will change how British citizens enter and exit the Schengen Area.

Where does this apply? 🌎
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland.

Where it does not apply: ⚠️
Republic of Ireland and Cyprus — EES won’t affect travel to these countries.

✨ What to expect:
👉 No more manual passport stamps
👉 Fingerprints + a photo may be required on your first entry
👉 UK travellers can still stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa

🧳 Tip: Allow extra time for your first trip after 12 October 2025 as border checks may take longer during the rollout.
