1876 The death of James Baird, Scottish foundryman, industrialist, philanthropist and MP for Falkirk Burghs. He founded William Baird & Co. which went on to become the largest producers of iron in Britain, employing 10,000 people. He is buried at Alloway churchyard- see ©BB picture. The village was also the birthplace of the Scottish poet Robert Burns.

1829 Robert Peel's Act was passed, to establish a new police force in London and its suburbs. They were known as Peelers and then Bobbies, derived from his surname and Christian name respectively. This statue of Robert Peel (see ©BB picture) is in Bury, the town of his birth.
