🇦🇺 AUSTRALIA VISA FACT — KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

“I'M OVER 40. HAVE I LEFT IT TOO LATE TO MOVE TO AUSTRALIA?”

Not necessarily.

Age does matter for some Australian skilled migration pathways — but turning 40 certainly doesn't automatically mean Australia is off the table.

For example, applicants invited for the points-tested Skilled Independent (189), Skilled Nominated (190) and Skilled Work Regional (491) visas must generally be under 45 when invited to apply.

And age also affects the points you can receive.

But here's the important bit:

There isn't one single “Australian skilled visa”.

Different migration pathways have different eligibility requirements, and employer-sponsored routes can operate differently from points-tested skilled migration.

Your:
🎂 Age
💼 Occupation & experience
🎓 Qualifications
🗣️ English
📋 Skills assessment
🤝 Employer
📍 Location in Australia
…can all affect which options may be available.

So if you're 40, 41, 42 or older and have been telling yourself:

“I've probably missed my chance.”
Don't make that decision based on something you've read in a Facebook comment.
Find out what actually applies to YOU.

That's precisely why we created our:

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO series.

Good migration decisions should be based on your individual circumstances — not myths, rumours or somebody else's visa experience.

At Down Under Live, you can speak with registered migration professionals, employers and recruiters and start understanding what your realistic options might be.

💬 What age did you first seriously start thinking about moving to Australia?
20s? 30s? 40s? 50+?

I'd be really interested to see the answers below. 👇

❤️ WHAT IF MOVING TO AUSTRALIA CHANGED MORE THAN YOUR CAREER? 🇦🇺

Imagine finishing your shift...

Not changing what you do.

But changing what happens when work finishes.

Perhaps you're a physiotherapist.
A sonographer.
An occupational therapist.
A radiographer.
A paramedic.

Or another healthcare professional who's spent years building a career in the UK.

Your skills might stay the same.

But life outside work could look rather different.

☀️ More time outdoors
🏖️ Weekends by the coast
🌳 National parks on your doorstep
☕ Saturday morning coffee in the sunshine
👨‍👩‍👧 A completely different experience for your family
🌅 And perhaps a little more space to enjoy life outside your career

Moving to Australia isn't automatically a better life.

It's a different life — and whether it's right for you depends on far more than a photograph of a beach.

Jobs. Visas. Registration. Housing. Schools. Family. Finances.

They all matter.

But sometimes there's a question underneath all of those practical considerations:

“What if we actually did it?”

That's the question thousands of people have asked themselves before making the move.

Perhaps it's one you've asked too.

💬 If you moved to Australia, what would you most want to change about life outside work?

I'd love to hear the answers below. 👇

And tag the person you'd want beside you if you ever made the move. ❤️

❤️ A MOVE TO AUSTRALIA CAN START WITH ONE CONVERSATION.

You might be a physiotherapist wondering whether your qualifications will transfer.

A sonographer curious about opportunities.

An occupational therapist wondering where your skills are needed.

A radiographer thinking about a completely different lifestyle.

Or perhaps Australia has simply been sitting at the back of your mind for years...

“One day.”

The problem is knowing where to start.

Do I qualify?

Will my professional registration transfer?

Do I need a skills assessment?
Where are the jobs?

What could I earn?

Which part of Australia would suit us?

What about my partner and family?

Those are exactly the kinds of questions that turn a dream into a plan.

And you don't necessarily need all the answers before you begin.

Sometimes you just need to have the first conversation.

At Down Under Live, we're bringing together people considering Australia and New Zealand with:

🏥 Employers
🤝 Specialist Recruiters
🌏 Registered Migration Professionals
💼 Relocation & Migration Specialists

So instead of spending another evening searching the internet and wondering whether Australia could work for you...

🦴 PHYSIOTHERAPISTS — HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT AUSTRALIA? 🇦🇺

You've helped hundreds of people get back on their feet.

Perhaps it's time to think about where your own career could take you.

Physiotherapists work across an enormous range of Australian healthcare settings, including:
🏥 Hospitals
🏃 Rehabilitation
👵 Aged Care
🏡 Community Health
🏉 Sports & Musculoskeletal
🌏 Regional & Rural Healthcare

And here's an important point for UK physios considering the move.

Physiotherapist remains on Australia's Core Skills Occupation List, and Jobs and Skills Australia currently lists around 45,900 physiotherapists employed nationally.

But, as we explained yesterday, an occupation appearing on a skilled occupation list doesn't mean you can simply pack your bags and start work.

You'll need to investigate the appropriate registration, qualification/skills recognition and migration pathway for your circumstances.

That's why our message this week is:

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO.

But once you've understood the practicalities, there's another question worth asking...

Where could your physiotherapy career take you?

Sydney? Melbourne? Brisbane? Perth?

Or perhaps a regional community where your skills could make an enormous difference?

At Down Under Live, you can meet employers, healthcare recruiters and registered migration professionals and start exploring the possibilities face-to-face.

💬 Physios — would Australia tempt you?

I'M QUALIFIED IN THE UK. CAN I WORK IN AUSTRALIA?

If you're a physiotherapist, occupational therapist, radiographer, sonographer or another healthcare professional, it's tempting to think:

“I'm already qualified and experienced in the UK — surely I can just do the same job in Australia?”

The answer is:
Possibly — but your UK qualification is only part of the journey.

Depending on your profession and the route you're taking, there can be several separate things to consider:

🎓 Qualification recognition
Is your UK qualification recognised for your profession in Australia?

🩺 Professional registration
Does your occupation require Australian registration or professional accreditation before you can practise?

📋 Skills assessment
Some skilled migration pathways require a suitable skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority. Australia's Department of Home Affairs specifically says this is mandatory for points-tested visas including subclasses 189, 190 and 491.

🛂 Your visa pathway
Being professionally qualified to work in Australia and being eligible to migrate to Australia are not necessarily the same thing.

And there is some interesting news for Allied Health professionals.

Australia is currently developing faster and clearer registration pathways for experienced internationally qualified practitioners in occupational therapy, medical radiation practice, podiatry and dental professions. Ahpra says these professions were prioritised because they need more practitioners; as of 24 August 2026, implementation work is still underway.

So our advice is simple:

DON'T ASSUME. DON'T BE PUT OFF. FIND OUT.

Understanding the process before you start making major decisions could save considerable time, money and frustration.

And that's one of the reasons for Down Under Live — giving you the opportunity to speak with employers, recruiters and registered migration professionals about turning an idea into a realistic plan.

💬 Healthcare professionals: what would you most like to know about working in Australia?

Put your question below 👇 — we may turn it into one of our next Know Before You Go posts.

🩻 SONOGRAPHERS — COULD YOUR SKILLS TAKE YOU TO AUSTRALIA? 🇦🇺

You spend your working life helping clinicians see what others can't.

But have you ever looked at where your own career could take you?

Sonographers work across Australia's healthcare system, including:

👶 Obstetric & Gynaecological Imaging
❤️ Cardiac Sonography
🏥 General Medical Ultrasound
🩸 Vascular Ultrasound
🩻 Hospital & Diagnostic Imaging Services

And opportunities aren't necessarily confined to Sydney or Melbourne.

For an experienced UK sonographer considering Australia, however, finding an employer is only part of the journey.

You'll also need to understand the professional recognition and migration requirements that apply to your circumstances.

That's why we keep coming back to the same advice:

Know before you go.

Find out what your qualifications mean in Australia.

Understand the registration/accreditation requirements.

Explore your migration options.

And then start looking at where your skills could take you.

At Down Under Live, you can meet employers, specialist recruiters and registered migration professionals and start having those conversations face-to-face.

🇦🇺 AUSTRALIA ISN'T JUST LOOKING FOR PEOPLE TO BUILD.

IT NEEDS PEOPLE TO LEAD THE BUILD.

When we talk about Australia's construction opportunities, it's easy to think about electricians, carpenters, plumbers and other skilled trades.

But behind every major project is another group of professionals.

The people who plan it.
Price it.
Manage it.
Survey it.
And ultimately deliver it.

We're talking about:
🏗️ Construction Managers
📐 Quantity Surveyors
📋 Project Managers
📏 Surveyors
💰 Estimators
👷 Site & Project Supervisors

And they're helping deliver everything from new housing and commercial developments to transport, energy and major infrastructure.

So if you've spent years building your career in UK construction, perhaps the question isn't simply:

“Are there jobs in Australia?”

Perhaps it's:

“Could my experience help deliver Australia's next generation of projects?”

As always, occupational demand doesn't automatically mean visa eligibility.

Qualifications, experience, skills assessment and the particular migration pathway can all matter.

But that's why it's worth finding out.

🇦🇺 AUSTRALIA VISA FACT — KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

“My occupation is in demand in Australia, so I should be able to get a visa.”

Unfortunately, it isn't quite that simple.

Australia certainly has skills shortages, and Jobs and Skills Australia's 2025 Occupation Shortage List found 29% of occupations assessed were in shortage, with shortages particularly persistent in areas including health, education and construction.

But here's the important bit:

An occupation being in shortage doesn't automatically make you eligible for an Australian visa.

Depending on the pathway, other requirements can include your:
🎂 Age
🗣️ English language ability
🎓 Qualifications
💼 Work experience
📋 Skills assessment
📊 Points score
📍 State or territory nomination
🤝 Employer sponsorship

And different visa pathways have different requirements.

That's why we keep making the distinction between:
“Australia needs people who do what I do.”

and

“I qualify for a pathway that could allow me to move there.”

They're not necessarily the same thing.

The encouraging part?

Don't guess. Find out.

At Down Under Live, you can speak face-to-face with registered migration professionals, recruiters and employers and start understanding where your circumstances may fit.

☀️ SAME TRADE. VERY DIFFERENT SATURDAY. 🇦🇺

Monday to Friday, you might still be an electrician.

A carpenter.

A plumber.

A welder.

A painter.

Or another skilled tradesperson.

But what happens when you put the tools down on Friday afternoon could look rather different...

🏖️ Saturday morning at the beach
☕ Coffee overlooking the ocean
🏄 A few hours in the water
🔥 BBQ with friends in the evening
🌅 And another Australian sunset to finish the day

Moving to Australia is obviously about much more than sunshine and beaches.

There's employment to consider.
Visas.
Skills recognition.
Licensing.
Housing.
Schools.

And the enormous practical reality of moving your life to the other side of the world.

But behind all those practical questions is usually one much simpler thought:

Could we build a different life?

That's what Down Under Live is really about.

Helping people move from dreaming about Australia to finding out whether that dream could realistically work for them.

💬 If you lived in Australia, what would your perfect Saturday look like?

🇦🇺 WHAT WOULD YOU HELP BUILD IN AUSTRALIA?

When we talk about opportunities for skilled tradespeople Down Under, it's easy to think simply about building houses.

But Australia's construction workforce is involved in something much bigger.
🏠 New homes
🏥 Hospitals & public buildings
🛣️ Roads & bridges
🚆 Rail & transport infrastructure
⚡ Renewable energy projects
📡 Telecommunications infrastructure

Australia's construction industry currently employs around 1.37 million people — and employment grew by approximately 22,000 in the year to February 2026.

Meanwhile, Australia's official Smart Move initiative highlights the need for skilled construction workers to help deliver housing and major infrastructure across the country.

That can mean opportunities for people with skills including:
🔨 Carpenters & Joiners
⚡ Electricians
🚰 Plumbers
🔥 Welders & Fabricators
🎨 Painters
🏗️ And many other construction trades

Of course, demand for an occupation doesn't automatically mean you're eligible for a visa, and licensing or skills-recognition requirements may apply.

But if you've spent years building things here in the UK...

Perhaps it's worth finding out what you could help build in Australia.
