On this day in music history, 56 yrs ago:
May 23–24, 1970, Fleetwood Mac, fronted by founder Peter Green, played their legendary final concert together at the "Aquae Sulis Incident" music festival held at Twerton Park (the home of Bath City FC).
The festival, often dubbed the "Aquae Sulis" after the ancient Roman name for Bath, ended chaotically when organisers shut off the band's equipment and floodlights mid-performance.
A timeline of the event and its aftermath:
* The Festival: Billed as a Spring music festival, it took place at Twerton Park on Saturday, May 23, running into the early hours of Sunday morning.
* The Final Showdown: At around 12:20 AM, while Fleetwood Mac was still playing, festival organisers abruptly cut the floodlights and the band's power.
Mick Fleetwood continued to drum solo in the dark as fans lit fires and joined him on stage before the drums finally stopped at 12:50 AM.
* Peter Green's Departure: This notoriously chaotic performance marked Peter Green's last gig with the band he founded. Deeply disillusioned with the music industry and his personal struggles, he quit shortly afterward to step away from the limelight.
* Historical Significance: The Aquae Sulis show is cemented in local and rock history as the heartbreaking end of the original, blues-driven Fleetwood Mac. Find out more when you come on one of our Rock n Stroll tours. Mick Fleetwood Fleetwood Mac
