My time in Scotland for this winter has come to an end now - I’ve had 5 weeks of playing in the snow, and it’s been wonderful.
In many ways I’m sad to be leaving - but undoubtedly I’ve had a great winter season - Lots of personal days on the hills, some biking and a little bit of skiing. Bothies visited, log fires lit, mountains ascended and countless hugs, laughs and friends along the way made it all the more special.
I’ve also had a good variety of work, with the highlights being a 3 day Winter Skills with a school in the first week of January - so much light fluffy powder! And wrapped up wonderfully with a fabulous 5 day Winter Skills residential. We had 6 keen and prepared participants going from zero to experienced winter walkers, competent in crampons, and getting great at reading the snow conditions - they’ll be off on their own adventures in no time!
There was lots of other great personal and work adventures, too many to mention, but the thing that really stood out to me this year is how much the Highlands feel like home. Everywhere I go, there’s people I know. Some people from back home in Eryri, but other friends from all over the UK. We all convene in the Highlands for winter and build a new community in the snow. Come the end of the season, and we all disband and head back to our summer dwellings, but without doubt we’ll be back next season.
To each and every one of you - thanks for making this a great winter season…same again next year, but for longer?
