Today, 23 May, marks World Turtle Day โ€” a celebration of some of the oceanโ€™s most ancient and fascinating marine creatures ๐Ÿ’š From nesting beaches in Africa to vibrant reefs across the Indian Ocean, turtle encounters are among the most unforgettable wildlife experiences for travellers ๐ŸŒŠโœจ

World Turtle Day also highlights the importance of protecting these incredible species, many of which are under threat due to habitat loss, pollution and climate change. Responsible tourism helps support conservation efforts and safeguard nesting beaches for future generations ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿข

Looking for the best places to see turtles in the wild? ๐Ÿ‘€๐ŸŒด

South Africa & Mozambique
Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles return each year to the beaches of KwaZulu-Natalโ€™s Elephant Coast and southern Mozambique to nest ๐Ÿฅš๐Ÿ๏ธ Between November and February, females carefully dig nests in the sand before laying their eggs. Around 55โ€“70 days later, tiny hatchlings emerge and begin their remarkable journey to the ocean ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿข

Madagascar
Slip on your mask and flippers ๐Ÿคฟ and snorkel alongside Green and Hawksbill turtles in the crystal-clear waters around Nosy Komba. Nesting season usually runs from October to February, with hatchlings appearing 45โ€“60 days after the eggs are laid ๐Ÿฃ๐ŸŒด

Seychelles
The Seychelles is a true turtle paradise โœจ Green and Hawksbill turtles nest on the pristine beaches of Denis Private Island, North Island, Curieuse and Cousin Islands ๐Ÿ๏ธ๐Ÿข Smaller nesting sites can also be found on Mahรฉ, Praslin and La Digue.
