RMS Titanic struck a North Atlantic iceberg at 11:40 PM in the evening of 14 April 1912 at a speed of 20.5 knots (23.6 MPH).

Those that perished in those ice cold waters are remembered in the Memorial garden on the ‘Titanic Slipways’, where 4 grass lawns alternate with timber decking to illustrate the proportion of those that lost their lives and those who lived, from each of the passenger classes and crew. The inquiry found that 20 lifeboats were not enough, there had been no proper boat drill or muster and not enough was done to save the lives of the 3rd class passengers. All first and second class children survived but only 27 from 79, 3rd class children survived even though the lives of one third of the first class male passengers were saved

The lamp posts represent the stanchions of Arrol Gantry (they are one third of the size of the actual Gantry). The original Arrol gantry (dimensions 46m x 82m x 260m) was built Sir William Arrol from Glasgow who also built Tower Bridge and the Humber Bridge) to construct the Olympic Class liners. Resembling a massive Meccano set at 260 metres long and 82 metres wide and 46 metres high, the gantry was the most prominent man made feature of the Belfast sky-line until its demolition in the 1960s

On the slipways there is a life size plan of Titanic’s Promenade Deck which is inlaid in white stone, where the ship would have been constructed, outlining where the liner’s lifeboats and funnels and benches on board would have been. You can see the position of the liners lifeboats and funnels and have a seat at one of the benches positioned exactly as they would have been on the deck. At night time the deck plan is illuminated by blue light Due to the size of the Olympic-class ships it took Harland & Wolff 2 years to construct purpose built slipways
