A Wild & Wonderful Day at Flamborough Head
We finally managed to escape for a few glorious hours at the weekend, heading up to one of my favourite childhood spots—North Landing and Thornwick Bay at Flamborough Head. This wild and rugged coastline, just 30 minutes north of Kingfisher Lakes, is timeless and totally unspoilt—exactly how a coastal adventure should be.
After a soggy Sunday morning, the skies cleared just in time for our little road trip north. We parked up at North Landing (not bad at £3.30 for 3 hours) and made a beeline for the Boathouse Burger and Grill. I’ve been recommending this place to our guests all summer after seeing their delicious posts online, but hadn’t had the chance to try it myself—until now!
Despite a power cut meaning no hot food that day, it didn’t matter. I was craving a simple crab or lobster sandwich by the sea anyway—and that’s exactly what we got (£8 and £12). We took our lunch to a perfect little viewpoint nestled between the fishing boats overlooking North Landing’s beach. The sun was shining, the sea was twinkling, and people were paddling and swimming below. We immediately wished we’d brought our swimmers, towels or even a spare set of clothes—but that’s East Yorkshire for you: full of sunny surprises!
After soaking in the view, our next mission was clear: ice cream. A bit of a climb back up the hill brought us to Bertie’s, the cutest ice cream van, where we each chose a classic 99. Cones in hand, we wandered down the road towards Thornwick Bay, following a well-worn, grassy trail down to the water. The bay was sprinkled with paddleboarders, swimmers, and families enjoying the sunshine.
We explored the rock pools and scrambled across the giant boulders I remembered so fondly from childhood. It still felt like we were discovering it all for the first time. Make sure you’ve got sturdy shoes—those rocks can be slippery! A natural archway carved into the cliffs gave us a stunning peek through to the other side of the bay and even out towards Scarborough.
After checking tide times on our phones, we saw it was safe to cross the ‘stepping stones’—with waves lapping at our ankles—to reach the reward: a peaceful, hidden cove all to ourselves. It felt like heaven. I couldn’t resist a paddle in a sun-warmed seapool left behind by the tide.
Eventually, with the parking meter ticking, we made a quick climb up the muddy slope from Little Thornwick Bay and returned to the car—muddy, salty, happy and sun-kissed.
It was back to work that evening, but with hearts full of coastal joy 💙
(We later found out our friends had also been at Flamborough that day, basing themselves at the larger Lighthouse car park area, they'd seen hundreds of seals at the stunning 'Drinking Dinosaur' bay and also dolphins swimming by too!) 🦭🦭🐬🐬
We wholeheartedly recommend this day out to our guests—it’s East Yorkshire at its finest 🧡
P.S. If you’re heading into Bridlington too, don’t miss The Old Lifeboat House on Marine Drive. Super fresh seafood, cooked simply but superbly, and great coffee from our friends at EyUp Coffee. Or Naked Fish, a bit more than you're usual chippy - more interesting seafood caught fresh that day cooked alongside the traditional fillets of haddock and cod.
Casual, delicious, and right by the sea—what more could you want?
