Are you up for this mega-step challenge on Bank Holiday Monday (25th August) when we open the west towers to the public? 200 steps gets you out onto the top of the north-west tower - but it isn't for the faint-hearted. Our medieval, spiral stone steps often have very big risers and small treads so you will need to go carefully and you'll most certainly be puffing and panting by the time you reach the top.

This has to be the biggest spanner at the Minster, surely! Tower captain, Mike produced it as we tour guides shuffled up close to the 7-ton bell, Great John that rings the hourly chimes from the south-west tower of the church. We were there to learn more about the towers in advance of the once-a-year chance to explore them on Bank Holiday Monday (25th August).

And if the weather is kind, we will take you right up to the roof of the north-west tower for some stunning views of the town and surrounding countryside.

No need to book ahead. Just turn up at the Minster on Monday and pay to join a tour. It'll be done on a first-come, first-served basis with guided tours starting at 10.30am. Be prepared for lots of steps!

Us tour guides at Beverley Minster had a truly fascinating afternoon recently, getting to know the West Towers better, in preparation for the once-a-year Towers Open Day.

Tower Captain Mike gave us the full insider’s tour – taking us right up close to Great John as it struck the hour (our heads are still ringing!), showing us the intricate clock mechanism that powers the quarter-hour chimes, and pointing out centuries-old graffiti carved back in the 1500s.

It was far too windy to venture onto the roof that day… but on Bank Holiday Monday, 25th August, if the weather is kind, we’ll be taking you all the way to the top of the north-west tower. From there, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views right across Beverley and East Yorkshire. 🌆

It’s a lot of steps (so come prepared!), but we promise it’s worth every single one.
Don’t miss this once-a-year chance to see Beverley Minster and the town from a whole new perspective.

There's a once-a-year chance to explore the West Towers of the Minster on Bank Holiday Monday (25th August), giving you the rare chance to climb right up onto the roof (weather permitting). Along the way, you’ll discover:

Let's talk about boots....

If you're joining us for a Beverley Minster Roof Tour, here’s your friendly heads-up: please wear closed-heeled shoes.

With narrow spiral staircases, ancient stone steps, and a fair few dizzying heights, you’ll need sturdy footwear — think trainers, walking shoes or boots. Basically, anything you can trust not to slip off as you head into the roof.

💅 As fabulous as sandals or flip flops might be, we’re afraid we can’t allow anyone on the tour in unsuitable shoes — health & safety (and common sense!) have the final word.

So lace up, step steady, and get ready for some of the best views in East Yorkshire.

Ever wondered what it’s like to stand high above the nave of Beverley Minster? On the Roof Tour, you’ll step into the Georgian workshop perched just above the great arches, and then peer down through the boss (the access hole in the ceiling) to the ground floor 70 feet below.

This hidden space, used by maintenance teams since the 18th century, offers a unique and slightly dizzying perspective of the Minster’s scale and craftsmanship. It’s one of those moments that makes you stop, stare—and grab the handrail.

Our expert guides (yes, we’re all a little obsessed with this place) will walk you through the incredible feats of engineering, centuries-old tools, and the stories carved into every beam and stone.
