This September, there are just three opportunities to experience Beverley Minster in a completely different way, as part of the Walking East Yorkshire Festival.

Your expert Minster guide will take you from the oldest part of the building to the newest.

You’ll hear the remarkable story of how a miracle attributed to St John of Beverley is said to have saved the Canons when the smaller transept tower collapsed during the early medieval building of the church, and discover fascinating details about the Quire that you might otherwise walk straight past.

Then it’s upwards – more than 100 steps into the rarely visited west towers, taking you around 200 years forward in the Minster’s history.

Up there you’ll discover:

- A peephole offering a glimpse of the enormous Great John bell from the floor below

- Around 400 years of graffiti in the tympanum (the room above the west doors)

- The clock room and its fascinating mechanism

- Why one southwest tower is 15 inches bigger than its twin

For health and safety reasons, the tour doesn’t extend to the very top of the towers, but there is still plenty to explore and discover in this fascinating, rarely visited space.

It’s not simply a chance to visit somewhere rarely seen – it’s an opportunity to look at Beverley Minster with an expert guide and discover stories and details you may never have noticed before.
