Saturday on The Super Summer Man was Manx Electric Railway day. First though, it was the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway - a full (shortened) length run to Derby Castle then on to the tram to Laxey. Here, we switched to the Snaefell Mountain Railway to climb to the top of the Island - the very top of which was in cloud!

As we came down, we soon dropped out of this cloud to splendid views over the Island before lunching in Laxey then riding the Great Laxey Mine Railway and continuing on foot to the famous Lady Isabella Laxey Water Wheel.

Back to Lacey, we rejoined the MER for the exhilarating cliff top run to Ramsey, past fantastic sea views and fields of wild goats. A chance to explore Ramsey, the 2nd most populous town on to the Island then a full length run back to Douglas on the Electric Railway just in time to catch the last horse tram or see the MV Manxman arrive in the Bay.

The Super Summer Man's first full day on the Island certainly saw variety, not to mention covering large parts of the Island geographically and historically.

Starting with the views over Douglas Bay from the headland, we went along Marine Drive for views and photos of the first steam train of the day reaching the summit of the climb from Douglas.

We then went further back in time to Cregneash heritage village before continuing to the southern end of the Island at the Calf of Man, where the local residents (seals) were swimming but mainly sun bathing!

Then it was on to St John's and Tynwald Hill, and St John's Civic Church - still vital sites for the Island's Parliament, claimed to be the world's oldest continuous form of Government.

This brought us to the ancient capital of Peel, with it's ancient Castle, Victorian promenade and world-beating House of Manannan Museum on the site of the former Station.

The rest of our afternoon was spent enjoying the scenery and tracking both the former Manx Northern Railway and TT course, heading to Sulby and back to base via the Isle of Man Railway's former Union Mills Station - anyone know which internationally successful pop family had their childhood home at Union Mills?

The final morning of The Greatest Gathering holiday saw us head to Leicester and two attractions that are out if this world!

First up, the National Space Centre - packed with space Ships and science facts and also a half hour film on human space travel to Mars.

Next door is the amazing Abbey Pumping Station, the only place in the world you can see 4 massive pumping engines still in action. They weren't in steam for visit bit 2 ft gauge steam loco Leonard was (specially for us!) and we also got a good look around the reserve collection, known by the volunteers as 'the toy box' but very much full sized, before heading for Leicester Station and trains home.

Monday was a varied day on The Greatest Gathering holiday, though with a definite 'Tram' theme.

The day started with the present day NET trams to the north at Phoenix Park and then coach to Crich Tramway Village to learn and experience much, much more about the trans of the past. The vast collection here was partly on view, with lots going on in the restoration shed and the well presented Exhibition Hall telling the story of trams.

As the weather turned, we headed south for a possible Inside Track first - John Taylor & Co. Bellfoundry in Loughborough. Preserving skills familiar to the heritage Railway sector, this is the world's largest Bellfoundry and the tours laid on especially for us covered the processes and skills involved in producing English Change ringing bells.

From here, we moved on to the Mountsorrel Heritage Centre. Although time was short before their closing time, we managed a ride on their 2' gauge Railway and a special demonstration of the 1834 Robert Stephenson lifting bridge they have restored as well as a look around their Railway and quarrying displays.

Finally, it was back to the NET for a tram right through the City Centre from Toton Lane.

Sunday of The Greatest Gathering holiday was Greatest Gathering day! The reported queues of the first day were not repeated thanks to sensible changes by the organisers, allowing entry to start early so we were inside by the official opening time.

Some spent the whole day at Derby but many took the option of an afternoon visit to the Great Central Railway (Nottingham) at Ruddington. They were running their DMU over about half the line to Rushcliffe Halt - does anyone know why this was originally built?

We then had a good look around the Nottingham Area Transport Society Bus collection, with the history of the fleet explained by the friendly volunteers.

On the way back to the hotel, a further option of a drink in the Ye Okd Trip to Jerusalem - one of the claimants of the title 'oldest pub in Europe' to be found in Nottingham. A history walk back to the hotel passed the other 2, as well as some local outlaw who seems quite celebrated!

Saturday of The Greatest Gathering holiday and we whether our appetite for the big show itself tomorrow by visiting 2 former mainlines now run as rather different heritage railways.

First up, the great Great Central Railway - 'Britain's last mainline' preserved for much of its length in its full, double track glory and with a timetable that makes sure the experience of steam trains passing on the move is regularly experienced.

This weekend is also the Portable Railway event, with an attempt on the world record for the longest such Railway!

We tore ourselves away for the network rail journey from the 'other' Loughborough Station to Matlock, which involved about 30 minutes at Derby where it was all happening - the VSOE British Pullman, a special charter run in connection with Rail 200 - oh, and some green steam locomotive called Flying Scotsman.......

Our journey to Matlock took us on the former Midland Railway mainline to Manchester, part of which has been rebuilt beyond Matlock by Peakrail. They now use the other platform to that which on we arrived at Matlock and today were operating a heritage diesel railcard, which gave excellent views across the lower Peaks scenery.

We then headed back to Nottingham, past the dinosaur reserve in the City to our hotel at the former Nottingham Victoria Station.
