On the 3rd of September, we pay tribute to the Merchant Navy by proudly flying the Red Ensign.

Merchant Navy Day is held on 3 September every year and highlights the vital role of merchant seafarers - past, present, and future.

It is thanks to their bravery that our supply lines have been kept open during global conflicts including the world wars, as well as crises such as the Covid-19 pandemic.

🥾 Clovelly to Hartland Quay: one of the best hikes in North Devon 🌊🪨🌲

This 10-mile coastal walk follows one of the most dramatic sections of the South West Coast Path — winding through woodland, skimming rugged cliffs, and offering constant views over the Atlantic.

🌳 Start in Clovelly, a cobbled village tumbling down to a shingle beach. From there, the trail meanders through ancient forest and emerges near Mouth Mill, a quiet cove framed by jagged headlands.

📡 From Hartland Point Radar Tower, the route climbs and drops along rocky cliff paths, past a 19th-century lighthouse and panoramic viewpoints. The final stretch leads to Hartland Quay, once a thriving port, now a wild and remote part of the North Devon coast.

🧭 Highlights include:
– Secluded beaches below towering cliffs
– A WWII-era radar station
– Sweeping views at Gawlish Cliff
– A quick stop for ice cream near the lighthouse
– A pint or an overnight stay at the Hartland Quay Hotel

💡 Tip: There’s no public transport back from Hartland Quay, so plan a lift, taxi or onward hike.
