Messages like this one from Jacqueline Ringrose are the reason I do what I do.

When someone takes the time to write something this lovely after their trip, it genuinely makes every late email and early call completely worthwhile. New York, Niagara, Quebec, good food, champagne, and two bears who travelled in comfort and style throughout.

I am so glad it was everything you hoped for, .ringrose.9 . Thank you.

That's a wrap on my Italy series.

Over the last couple of weeks I have been sharing everything I learned from a recent research trip to Florence, Rome and Naples, from honest hotel verdicts to where to go first in each city, what to eat, and how to get between them by train.

If you missed any of it, the full practical guide is now on my website. Whether you are thinking about Italy for next year or just enjoy reading about it, I hope there was something useful in there for you!

I have been to three European countries since the new Entry Exit System launched, and I want to share what actually happened at the border, because the headlines have not always been helpful.

Malta in March, Poland in April, Italy in May. Between them, six border crossings. The queues on arrival were short each time. On departure from Italy, there was no queue at all.

This matches what is happening on the ground more broadly. Greece, Portugal, and Italy have all suspended or scaled back biometric checks since the system fully launched in April, largely because the queues were causing real disruption.

The system is still settling in and the experience varies by airport and by time of day, but the picture is nowhere near as alarming as some of the coverage has suggested.

One thing that does catch people out, and this applies regardless of EES, is the queue after security on the way home. Once you have done your shopping, you still need to get through passport control before your gate. Allow time for that. It is easy to forget when you are in holiday mode.

My honest advice: do not let EES put you off travelling to Europe this summer. Go. Just build in a little extra time at the airport and check the latest advice for your specific destination before you travel.

Seat 11A on a Ryanair flight is listed as a window seat. There is no window. Just a wall. I have photographic evidence. Ryanair we love you, but maybe just a tiny note at booking stage? For those of us who packed our expectations along with our hand luggage

By day two in Rome we had also developed a problem. Saying "When in Rome" had started innocently enough. Perfectly accurate. Somewhere along the way it became a competition to see who could work it into conversation the most times in a single day. We got quite good at it.

But by the time we reached Naples the phrase no longer applied, geographically speaking. It took an embarrassingly long time to sink in!

We arrived to find every road in the city closed and the Pope in town. He had clearly followed us from Rome and didn't want to miss out... We watched his helicopter take off from the bay before the roads reopened. He could have offered us a lift!!

I have worked with a lot of ground operators over the years. The difference with Towns of Italy is that you can feel the expertise at every single stage.

Over six days across Florence, Rome, and Naples, they arranged hotel inspections, guided tours of the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and the Vatican, a food tour through the streets of Rome, a wine windows tour in Florence with olive oil tasting, cookery classes in both cities, a show dinner, and a day trip to Pompeii. That is before you get to the transfers, the logistics, and the personal touches that make everything feel effortless.

Every guide we met was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and genuinely good company. Margherita in Florence, Anna in Rome, and Cosimo in Naples each brought something different to the trip, and all three clearly know their cities inside out.

I should also say that this trip ran during their peak season, which is not when these trade educational visits usually happen. The fact that they accommodated us at their busiest time says a great deal about the kind of operator they are.

If you are thinking about Italy and want an itinerary that is properly put together, with the right people on the ground at every stop, get in touch, and I will take it from there.

I first visited Pompeii in 2002. I was not expecting it to feel just as remarkable the second time around.

The archaeologists have been busy. More of the site has been excavated since my last visit, and the guide brought real depth to what you are looking at, explaining how people lived, how the city was structured, and what the eruption of Vesuvius actually did to the thousands of people who could not get out in time. You leave with a very different understanding of the ancient world than any textbook gives you.

A few things worth knowing if you are planning a visit.

Herculaneum, a smaller Roman town also buried by Vesuvius, is nearby and well worth adding to the same day if you have time.

Many of the most significant artefacts from Pompeii have been moved to the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, so if you want the full picture, that is worth adding too.

And Vesuvius is still there, sitting above the bay, very much an active volcano. And people still live in modern Pompeii right next to it. It puts the whole place into a rather different perspective.

Worth every minute.

I covered Florence, Rome, and Naples entirely by train, and I would not have done it any other way.

The high speed Italo trains between cities are clean, comfortable, and genuinely good value. Florence to Rome takes just under two hours. Rome to Naples is about an hour and a half. Both times I travelled in business class, which meant a little more legroom, comfortable seats, and enough peace and quiet to catch up with my work.

A few things worth knowing before you travel.

Check your ticket carefully before you board. If your ticket does not have a QR code on it, you need to validate it at the machines in the station before you get on the train. This catches people out often.

Rome Termini station is worth arriving at early. The central market inside, O Mercato Centrale, is a vast, buzzing food hall with an enormous variety of stalls, reasonable prices, and far more atmosphere than most of the tourist restaurants nearby.

Worth a visit even if you are not hungry, it's definitely not your average station food!!

And if you are planning to travel between Naples and Sorrento, the train is not your only option. The ferry runs regularly between the two and gives you a completely different perspective on the bay, with Capri sitting just off the coast as you cross.

One of the best parts of a FAM trip is getting to inspect hotels properly. Not just the lobby, but the rooms, the rooftops, the restaurants, and the details that never make it into the brochure.
Here is what I found across Florence, Rome, and Naples.

In Florence, the Teatro Luxury Apartments are ideal if you want space and independence. A separate living room, kitchen, GHD, concierge service, and views across the city. Fifteen minutes along the river to the main sights.

The Albergo Rivoli is something else entirely, a former convent converted into a quirky, beautifully appointed hotel with internal terraced gardens that feel like a complete escape from the city outside. The restaurant is spectacular.

The Porta Rossa is the standout of the three, and possibly of the whole trip. A bedroom, a bathroom up a spiral staircase, and then a private fully stocked bar at the very top of what was once the tallest tower in Florence. Three hundred and sixty degree views including the Duomo. Truly special.

In Rome, the ART'OTEL is a five star property with original artwork throughout, an excellent Asian fusion restaurant, and a quiet location just fifteen minutes from the main sights. The service was impeccable.

The Grand Hotel Palatino was a real surprise, beautifully appointed rooms many with balconies, car parking for guests, and a calm green setting that feels like a retreat in the middle of the city. Its sister property, the Cross Hotel, is equally worth considering.

The Monti Palace is independently owned and particularly well suited to groups, with a lovely roof terrace overlooking the city.

In Naples, I stayed at Hotel Naples. I will be recommending clients stay elsewhere!

Italy has completely ruined me for ordinary food. I'm not sorry!

All'Antico Vinaio in Florence has become something of an Instagram legend, so naturally I had to see the original for myself. The shop on Via dei Neri did not disappoint. €14 for the most enormous stuffed focaccia you have ever seen, plus a drink. There are branches across Italy and beyond now, but the original is worth seeking out.

Also in Florence: we found ourselves in the conservatory at the Gilli CafΓ©, reputedly the oldest cafΓ© in the city, with rain hammering on the roof outside. I ordered a drinking chocolate so thick you could stand your spoon up in it. Possibly the best bad weather decision I have ever made.

And before we left Florence I also tried Vinsanto, a local sweet wine served with cantucci biscuits for dipping. Do not skip this.

In Rome, the food tour around Piazza Navona took us to the city's most popular street food stop, Trapizzino, a small triangular pocket of pizza dough stuffed with slow-cooked meat. Simple, perfect, and gone in about thirty seconds.

Naples finished me off entirely. Dinner at Antonio e Antonio on the seafront: deep-fried pizza, buffalo mozzarella, arancini, tempura courgette flowers, and a limoncello that sealed the deal on the whole trip. (Did I mention I like Limoncello??!!)
