Malawi Fruits

Malawi Fruits We are a Scottish Charity committed to establishing and growing sustainable community businesses in t

Malawi Fruits began as part of the Raven Trust and was registered as a separate charity in 2011.Part of the policy of the Raven Trust is to initiate new specialized projects and then support them to become independent and Malawi Fruits is a perfect example of this. Malawi Fruits Trustees are volunteers who regularly visit Malawi and lead teams of Scottish tradesmen to undertake significant buildin

g projects. This has led to a love for the people of Northern Malawi and over the last few years we have been involved in initiating and supporting several projects as we have seen the significant impact that emerging small and medium sized businesses can have in the growth of the local economy. The following projects have been supported and are now run independently by local people:-

• A co-operative for honey producers in Livingstonia which has significantly increased their production and yield.

• A defunct maize mill providing a low cost solution for local growers

• Oxen and ploughs in a village to enable them to develop some unused ground for growing crops

As the charity has grown and we have built up our resource and expertise we have now developed a plan for two businesses: Livingstonia Lodges in the tourism sector; and, Nyika Food Processing in the agricultural sector. Malawi Fruits organises teams of Scottish tradesmen and volunteers to work alongside local tradesmen in building projects. Much of this work has been in partnership with the Orphan Care Programme in Livingstonia, building houses for child-headed families and widows caring for an extended family. As the emphasis of Malawi Fruits work moves towards sustainable businesses, it is intended that surpluses generated will be invested in further Orphan Care projects.

It’s not all Trump’s fault.

A "bridge" across our water source at Bula Farm. World news moves at such a pace that it's difficult to keep up. It was only last August that President Trump announced sweeping cuts to the US AID programme, with massive implications for Malawi. People are still talking about it: acknowledging the pain of the cuts, while simultaneously saying that Malawi must stand on its own feet and take control of its future....

When the elephants fight, the grass gets trampled

Even the tankers are queueing for fuel. There is nothing new about fuel shortages in Malawi, but this time it is different, and much worse. In the past, it tended to be one city affected at a time, but right now there are nationwide shortages and it's a huge problem. For me, it's just about getting out to projects and meeting people - the work I came here to do....

A Malawi Fruits history lesson

Malawi Fruits was born in 2011, but the roots of the charity go back to 2008 when a group of us went to Malawi to build houses, working with the charity Habitat for Humanity. That workparty was organised by three people: Alan Laverock, Jim Aitken and me. A second workparty followed in 2010, this time in the beautiful town of Livingstonia in Northern Malawi....

I write this as I start the long journey home from Malawi. From a personal point of view, it has been an incredibly frustrating trip, waiting for a container to arrive which is full of equipment that we thought we would be installing over the last few weeks. The container got stuck at Dar-es-Salaam, the port where the ship docked, and it was there for three weeks....

It was over 40 year's ago that an up and coming band from Ireland included a song simply called "40" on their new album. The lyrics weren't penned by U2 - they were written about 3,000 years ago and are in the Bible as "Psalm 40". I waited patiently for the Lord He inclined and heard my cry He brought me up out of the pit Out of the miry clay How long to sing this song…....

The next three weeks will bring some big changes at our office in Mzuzu. We have a container coming from the UK - yesterday we heard that it has landed in Dar-es-salaam in Tanzania and it should be here by 10th October. The container contains 25 Coolrun pods which will enable refrigerated and frozen goods to be transported around Malawi. We will use the pods to transport fruit and vegetables to the larger markets of the capital city and we are working with Lilongwe dairy who will transport their products in the other direction....

It's good to be back in Malawi and I arrived immediately after the general election. There is a new President and ruling party and, thankfully, the transition has been peaceful. Malawi has huge economic challenges and I've had the usual struggles to find fuel to make the long journey North from Lilongwe to Mzuzu. Fuel shortages arise from scarcity of foreign currency to import diesel and petrol and the currency shortages affect our work too....
